On December 22, singer-songwriter Barry Manilow revealed in a lengthy statement on social media that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The post shared on Facebook and Instagram read as follows:“As many of you know, I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks. Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.”Manilow, 82, continued:“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. The bad news is that the Christmas: A Gift of Love Concerts are over, I’m going into surgery to have the spot removed.”It is noteworthy that Barry Manilow began smoking at the age of nine while growing up in Brooklyn, NYC, according to his 2012 interview with The Standard. During his recent cancer diagnosis revelation, Manilow mentioned that his doctors believe his cancer has not spread yet; however, he was taking tests to confirm the same.“So that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns. The only follow-up is a month to recover, and that means we have to reschedule the January arena concerts,” the singer added. However, he later resumed the habit and replaced it with vaping.“Well, I smoked for 30 years. I started when I was 9 years old. I grew up in Brooklyn. Then I stopped about 15, 20 years ago. Then I just started in Las Vegas and the band, and I went down to a little club, and somebody offered me a cigarette. And I was back. Within a week, I was back,” Manilow revealed. The Looks Like We Made It artist added:“Not on a pack a day, cause when I was really smoking, I was on three packs a day — non-filters. Oh yeah. I was a great smoker.”Later, he mentioned that vaping worked for him, his band, and his crew, all of whom “hated smoking but couldn’t stop.”According to snaps captured by the Daily Mail, Barry Manilow was seen with a vape pen standing inside a parking lot in Palm Springs, California, on December 17, less than a week before he revealed his lung cancer diagnosis.Notably, this is not Manilow’s first cancer diagnosis. In 2020, his throat cancer was detected early and treated. However, over the last few years, he has also struggled with a mouth tumor, bronchial pneumonia, vocal cord disorder, cardiac issues, and hip surgery. I’m very old; I shouldn't be able to do this. You saw me going up those stairs on stage — there’s 14 steps up and 14 down, you would think I should be in a wheelchair or something.”Last year, Barry Manilow told The Hollywood Reporter that he’d quit smoking and had begun working out with a personal trainer every morning to stay in shape. However, he also gave a glimpse of his bad habits:“I don’t eat, and I don’t sleep. That’s also the trick (to staying in shape). I often find myself trembling and think, ‘Oh, I should get some calories in me.’ My family, most of them lived until 74, so when I hit 74, I thought: ‘This is the end.’ But it didn’t happen. It kept on going. I kept going on the road. I kept on making records. I mean, when does my body give in?”The Copacabana hitmaker mentioned to Parade in 2023 sleeping for four hours at night and staying true to his New York City fast-paced roots, talking and thinking fast, and moving and scrambling through the events of the day.In his recent social media statement, Barry Manilow announced the completion of five Christmas charity concerts for this year, thanking everyone who purchased tickets and attended the shows across the Coachella Valley, aka the McCullum Theater in Palm Desert. He also apologized for postponing the upcoming January arena shows and shared the new dates spanning from late February to late April.“I’m very sorry that you have to change your plans. Just like you, we were all looking forward to the January shows and hate having to move everything around. In the meantime, I’m counting the days until I return to my home away from home…” Barry Manilow stated. He was referring to the 2026 Valentine’s weekend concerts at the Westgate Las Vegas, scheduled for February 12, 13, and 14. Barry Manilow added that he was hopeful they were going to be one “big party.”The Grammy winner concluded his message by wishing everyone Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and urging the community to “get tested” even if they have the “slightest symptoms.”
