Religion can be a complex matter to discuss; Hugh Grant still wants to do it in Heretic (2024). His critically acclaimed movie is now available to stream on HBO Max. Though that's not all, there are more options to watch it, but we will discuss that in a minute.
Other than Hugh Grant, Companion's Sophie Thatcher and Generation's Chloe East also act. It tells a story about a couple of Mormon missionaries encountering a man who then traps them in his house.
The film was met with positive reviews from fans and critics alike, with Rotten Tomatoes showcasing 76% on its popcornmeter and 91% approval via its tomatometer.
It was first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and later went on to be released in the US, the UK, and Ireland. Although it was nominated for a range of awards, including Astra Film Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Satellite Awards, and more, it never received one.
Where to stream Hugh Grant's Heretic?
We have already mentioned that it will be available at HBO Max; a monthly subscription is available for $9.99. While you are at it, you can enjoy The Parenting arriving on March 13, 2025. If you can wait, Daniel Craig's Queer will be streaming from March 28 too.
Prime Video is another option where Heretic is available to rent for $5.99 and purchase for $19.99. More options are available for different qualities so you can check it out there to get what you need.
Fandango at Home and Apple TV are streaming it too, where both will cost $5.99. Hulu can be another go-to option for fans where the monthly subscription costs the same as HBO Max.
While these are a few options to watch the Hugh Grant film at home, it's also available in theaters if you are planning to go to cinemas at the weekend, as tickets are available at Regal Cinemas and Fandango.
What is Heretic about?
Don't expect the traditional Hugh Grant to be romantic like we are used to seeing him. Though he is indeed a charmer in there, as we see him in the trailer. Psychos come in many forms, and this character in Heretic is one of them.
As per the film's synopsis,
"Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door. Greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), the religious women are drawn into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, pulled further inside the strange man's house."
In the words of The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw, Hugh's performance as Mr. Reed was "suave, dapper, and evil." Though it wasn't a cakewalk for the actor given this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill psychopath character. He had to plumb the depths of similar characters through their available biographies, as he told BuzzFeed last year.
Not just Hugh, but Sophie Thatcher delved into her role and told Vanity Fair in an interview that she might take a break from getting into such topics now. She comes from a Mormon background, which might have helped in her portrayal of Sister Barnes. Though she left the church in real life for personal reasons.
Chloe East, who plays Sister Paxton in Heretic, was at first not sure if she wanted to do this movie when she saw the script, as she told IndieWire. But then she was intrigued by it and gave it her best shot. It worked.
