The Simpsons has recruited a new voice actor to replace long-time cast member Pamela Hayden. Hayden, who voiced Milhouse Van Houten, announced her retirement on November 30, 2024, after 35 seasons with the show. She also gave voice to characters like Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Janey Powell, and others. The 71-year-old announced her retirement in a statement:
"The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons? Not easily,"
She continued:
"It's been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show, and to give voice to Milhouse (and Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Janey, Malibu Stacy, and many others)."
According to Entertainment Weekly, singer Kelly Macleod will replace Hayden as Milhouse’s voice actor. She will make her debut appearance on the season 36 finale Estranger Things.
The new Milhouse voice actor on The Simpsons will have a limited role in her debut appearance
Kelly Macleod only has a one-liner for her debut appearance as Milhouse Van Houten. The singer will also perform as an adult version of Milhouse on the episode.
The description of the season finale foretells things going awry for Bart & Lisa as they stop watching Itchy & Scratchy together.
"When Bart & Lisa stop watching Itchy & Scratchy together, Marge fears that they’ll start to drift apart... but she has no idea how bad things are about to get!"
However, Milhouse is not Kelly Macleod’s first rodeo in The Simpsons. She had previously appeared in The Simpsons in 2022 in the Bart the Cool Kid episode of the show’s thirty-third season. She performed the song Two Badges, One Mind.
Matt Groening, The Simpsons creator, explained Milhouse’s origin story in a press release:
"Bart needed someone to talk to in the school cafeteria. We named him Milhouse because that was the most unfortunate name a kid could have,"
Milhouse Van Houten is not the only character in The Simpsons universe to have a new voice actor following Pamela Hayden’s retirement. The sixth-grade bully Jimbo Jones is now being played by comedian Mo Collins. The new voice actor for the beanie-wearing bully made her debut appearance on the April 13 episode of The Simpsons, titled "P.S. I Hate You."
