It might've taken 10 years, but the misunderstood horror comedy Jennifer's Body finally found its cult audience, and now, more than 15 years after the film's release, Jennifer's Body 2 has been confirmed by the creatives behind the show. Mismarketing of the original movie led to the Megan Fox starrer, a film that was quite ahead of its time, not faring very well at the box office.

However, even though it took some time, the film managed to find its audience, who understood it for what it was: a misunderstood feminist classic. In a recent conversation with Deadline, director Karyn Kusama revealed that the Jennifer's Body writer, Diablo Cody, is currently working on a script for Jennifer's Body 2.

In a recent conversation with Deadline, Kusama confirmed the multiple rumors swirling around Jennifer's Body 2. She revealed that the writer was currently working on the script and revealed some 'non-spoiler-y' details about it as well:

"I know she’s working on it [Jennifer's Body 2] right now, and I’m very excited to hear what comes of it. I know some of the bones of it, so I’m not going to give anything away, but it sounds fun and crazy like the first film. And I have no doubt that Diablo will do something absolutely incredible with it."

When Jennifer's Body originally premiered in 2009, it was marketed as a film for straight guys just as Twilight was for straight girls. Starring Megan Fox, high off her Transformers fame, the film was largely described as a fantasy horror, but in reality, it was anything but.

Director Kusama and writer Cody tried to offer a different framing for the film, describing it as:

"It’s a little bit more complicated than a straight comedy, a straight horror film, a straight high school movie, and see it for what it is which is a fresh take on all of those things" said Kusama

While Cody talked about the themes:

"This movie is a commentary on girl-on-girl hatred, s*xuality, the death of innocence, and also politics in the way the town responds to the tragedies [of the bloody deaths of several young men]. Any person who dares to respond in an unconventional way is branded a traitor."

Nevertheless, their attempts to reframe the perspective were unsuccessful, and the film flopped. The reviews that came in were harsh, to say the least. However, a decade later, the space around the film reviews had changed significantly, and the default lens of criticism was not just of a straight male anymore.

"I’m just so grateful that the film managed to find its audience, perhaps on a different timeline than any of us might have expected or hoped for, but I’m just so thankful that the work continues to speak to people. I’m just so satisfied by that." says Kusama

Quite ahead of its time, Jennifer's Body was re-examined, and what they discovered was a female cathartic response to disturbing and life-changing trauma, a revenge fantasy of sorts.

Now, more than 15 years after the original film's release and numerous talks about a sequel, Jennifer's Body 2 is finally in the works. While there are no other details about the sequel available at the time, the actors in the film have been more than vocal about their willingness to return to it.
