A24 has just revealed the first look at Hugh Jackman in the upcoming film, The Death of Robin Hood. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film is based on the Robin Hood legend like that of Robin Hood's Death, which is an early Early Modern English ballad.

The first look at Hugh Jackman, shows him in character, as Robin Hood, but while the character has traditionally been seen as a young man in Lincoln green, Jackman's version has a more rugged look. He is seen as an old man, with grey hair and beard, wearing heavy clothes made for harsh, cold weather.

Hugh Jackman's look and role in The Death of Robin Hood

Robin Hood has been a popular character in English folklore and literature, whose most popular presentation has been as an outlaw, who is a highly skilled archer and swordsman. In most modern versions, he's known for stealing from the rich, and giving it to the poor.

But in A24's The Death of Robin Hood, Hugh Jackman will be portraying a very different version of the character, as was evident from the first look pictures posted by A24 on Instagram with the caption:

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Jackman spoke about his character in The Death of Robin Hood, saying:

"What I love so much about Mike’s vision of Robin Hood is that the script delivered power, and it examines how power can be used for good or bad,"

He continued:

"Robin Hood is a real man in our story. With all the scars, the pain, the regret, and yes, the love. Mike’s story has weight to it. For me, it’s beautiful and human."

The images shared of Jackman as Robin Hood, and what he said about the character's portrayal in the upcoming film, suggest that this version of Robin Hood is going to be very different from the ones we've previously seen in the media or literature.

The film's writer-director, Michael Sarnoski, also spoke about the film with Entertainment Weekly, saying:

"You can be as familiar with earlier versions as you want."

He added:

"You'll be carried along to understand what this version is, because the performances are so specific and so different from what you've seen before."

This further adds a sense of mystery to the film since it is the first time Robin Hood is seen as a regular person, that too an older man, with a realistic story. The film's story will also highlight how a folktale or ballad can be interpreted in various ways and will hopefully resonate with audiences once it is released.

While an official plotline of the film hasn't been revealed, Sarnoski did give a general idea of the film and its version of Robin Hood, saying:

"He was this murderous outlaw who did a lot of terrible things, and was kind of monstrous. But he's lived long enough to see this folklore get created about him. He's figuring out how he feels about that, about being portrayed as a hero when he knows what he really was."

Thus, we are most likely going to see a more real and darker side of the legend that is hardly talked about. Since the character has always been celebrated as someone who does a lot for the poor people, his criminal side is often overlooked. The Death of Robin Hood will address exactly that.

Other than Hugh Jackman starring as Robin Hood, The Death of Robin Hood also stars Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe in unspecified roles. The film is produced by Aaron Ryder, Andrew Swett, and Alexander Black. The production companies behind the film are Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. A24 is the distributing studio.

The Death of Robin Hood will be released in theatres in 2026. A specific date of release is yet to be announced. Stay tuned for more information.
