Kaouther Ben Hania, who has moved the world with her films, is coming up with her next film called The Voice of Hind Rajab, which is based on one of the many heart-wrenching incidents that are happening amid the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. This particular incident happened in January 2024, when the five-year-old Hind Rajab was killed by an Israeli army tank.

Recently, the director discussed the film with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that she was unsure about doing justice to the story. When THR's Scott Roxborough asked her about "the most challenging aspect" of this story, she said,

"I think the most challenging thing was the weight of honoring this child’s story. It was a huge responsibility. I was afraid that I’d fail her voice, that my movie would not honor her memory. That was what caused the most anxiety on my side."

The Voice of Hind Rajab is due for a world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, which will be taking place on September 3, 2025. Additionally, the film has been selected as Tunisia's official entry at the Oscars for the Best International Feature Film.

After the incident, a 70-minute recording was released on the internet by the Red Crescent. Kaouther Ben Hania heard the recording and contacted the organization to get the full scenario. She knew after hearing it that she had to make The Voice of Hind Rajab, even though she was preparing for a different movie at the time.

For that, she contacted Hind's mother, which, of course, was necessary, as she would only do it with her permission. Additionally, after speaking to the mother, she also spoke to the Red Crescent employees regarding the incident.

Now that the film is about to be released, the director thinks that people should go and see it, which is "very important."

The incident happened on January 29, 2024, when the five-year-old was with her family in a car. The family was on its way out of Gaza to stay safe amid the conflict. However, an Israeli tank came in their way and attacked the vehicle, killing her aunt, uncle, and four cousins, leaving only her and one 15-year-old cousin alive.

The 15-year-old tried contacting the Palestinian Red Crescent Society for help, and she screamed,

"They are shooting at us. The tank is right next to me. We’re in the car, the tank is right next to us."

Following this, another round of attack from the Israeli tank killed the elder cousin, and left the five-year-old in the car amid her deceased family.

What's more disheartening is that she could have been saved, as an ambulance was dispatched for the rescue. However, the ambulance was also destroyed, which was revealed 12 days after the incident happened. The workers approaching for the rescue, Yusuf al-Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, were found dead too.

The Voice of Hind Rajab is being backed by Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, and more.
