Popular American actor James Van Der Beek, known for his role in the WB’s Dawson’s Creek, recently gave an update on his cancer journey. The actor joined Today on Friday for an interview where he spoke about how his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, has been a huge help during his cancer journey, providing him with support and care.

“I would not be alive if it weren't for my wife. She just has stepped up as a caretaker, as a nurse, as head of the household.”

While celebrating her husband’s birthday in March, Kimberly also expressed her appreciation for James. She felt lucky to be married to him and wished him good health.

“You are a treasure. I feel like the luckiest lady in the world to be married to you. May this year bring you so much laughter, dancing, deepening connection with God, exceptional health and exquisite beauty all around—plus, of course—family snuggles, sunrises, sunsets, play and restorative rest.”

More details on James Van Der Beek's interview with Today

On the Friday episode of Today, James Van Der Beek shared updates about his battle against colorectal cancer. He revealed that he was feeling better than he had in months.

“I feel much, much better than I did a couple months ago. It's been a longer journey than I ever thought it would be.”

He continued:

“It's required more of me, more patience, more discipline, more strength than I knew I had. I knew I was strong. I didn't know I was this strong. But I feel good.”

The Dawson’s Creek actor also spoke about his reaction when he received the diagnosis.

“I was so healthy, was in amazing cardiovascular shape. I was doing the cold plunges, and the saunas, and the intermittent fasting and all of it.”

He felt shock and, at that point, had no idea what he was going to do next.

“I went into shock. I really don't think I knew what to do. Neither did my wife. And we drove home in silence. And part of me wanted to panic. Part of me wanted to just freak out. But then another part of my brain was like, ‘You don't know enough yet.”

James Van Der Beek also shared that his children were so mature about the situation and handled it with so much strength that he became proud of their resilience.

“Kids know if you're not right. They know if you're sick. They know you're not feeling well. They know if you're in pain. So their request to me, especially the older ones, is, ‘Just be honest with us. We want to know.’”

James Van Der Beek advised his fans to get tested and regular check-ups.
