After starring in The Fall Guy (2024), Ryan Gosling is going up in space. Though this time, it's real and not a stunt. He will next be seen in Project Hail Mary in 2026. Project Hail Mary should be considered what Robert Pattinson's Mickey 17 was to this year.
To be more precise, it should be considered Mickey 17 meets Interstellar (2014), as Gosling will be trying to do something about a dying Earth, though in a funny manner.
The film is based on the novel of the same name Andy Weir wrote in 2021, and he was present at the San Diego Comic Con, where he praised the work of the crew on the upcoming film. He said,
"I've seen cuts of the film, and it's really good, guys. It's really good. These guys, they're amazing directors, everybody knows that. I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out."
If he is excited about it, we should expect that the directors and the actors have done justice to the story. The filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are returning to direction after over a decade, have helmed the project with a screenplay from The Martian (2015) writer Drew Goddard.
Speaking of Goddard, Andy praised him and said,
"I couldn’t ask for better talent in every aspect… we waited for Drew… We had to wait several months for him to finish [the project he was working on.]"
Other than Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and more are confirmed to appear in Project Hail Mary.
What is Project Hail Mary about?

Readers can take a look at the film's synopsis to get the gist. For potential spoilers, keep reading, as we will be sharing details about the novel's plot.
The story begins with a cosmic phenomenon where the Sun is dimming, and there's a threat of a potential ice age on Earth. To tackle this, Eva Stratt (Huller in the film) is appointed by the world governments, who later appoints Dr. Ryland Grace (Gosling in the film) to look into the matter.
What's interesting about Project Hail Mary is the fictional organism called Astrophage, which has caused nearby stars to lose their light as it feeds on radiation. And it's also the fuel for the starship in the story.
The mission is a go, but an incident happens that gives Ryland amnesia, and now he is all alone in space with no memory of who he is. That is a similar situation to The Martian, which, interestingly, was also written by Andy Weir as a novel and later adapted into a screenplay by Drew Goddard.
Is there a trailer?
Project Hail Mary got a trailer just about a month ago. It begins with Ryan Gosling waking up from a coma, and he is now stuck in a starship light-years from his apartment. The later scene shows him being reluctant about the mission as he tries to convince Huller by saying that he isn't an astronaut.
Though that doesn't work, as she convinces him by claiming that if he doesn't go into the space, he dies. That's not a threat. She speaks for all of humanity.
Project Hail Mary releases on March 20, 2026.
