Avengers: Doomsday is being filmed, and Marvel Comics have decided to come up with a new event focused on Doctor Doom. This is nothing new. Fans would recall that in 2016, as Captain America: Civil War was about to open in theaters, Marvel decided to release Civil War II to celebrate the release of the movie. The current Doom-focused event is happening in the form of comic book, and is titled One World Under Doom.
In the series, Victor Von Doom has become the new Sorcerer Supreme, and like always, Doom decides to take over the world. In the second issue of One World Under Doom, there is a moment in which Doom uses his magical powers to transform Ben Grimm/The Thing. This makes Doom a more threatening figure than he already was.
If the Russo Brothers were to adapt this particular moment into Avengers: Doomsday, it would make Robert Downey Jr.'s Victor Von Doom a powerful figure in the MCU. Doctor Doom using his powers to transform the Fantastic Four's The Thing would be similar to Thanos beating the Hulk in the first act of Avengers: Infinity War.
What happens in One World Under Doom?
Doctor Doom has taken over as the Sorcerer Supreme has been serving in that role for six months. As the Sorcerer Supreme, Doom has earned popular support because of two decrees — outlawing wars and universal healthcare. The synopsis for the series reads:
"ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM! Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme - then disappeared behind Latveria's closed borders. For most, there's enough going on in the world that Doom's absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was...the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World - the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth's leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it's mind control or Doombots, whatever's affecting them hasn't affected Earth's heroes - and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom's machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom? Marvel's biggest and most shocking event ever begins right here."
Fantastic Four try to take on Doom in the second issue of the series. Their encounter with Doom ends disastrously as Doom uses his extensive knowledge of magic to do something that Reed Richards has failed to do all these years: make Ben human again. This shocking act results in the Fantastic Four's devastating loss as Ben Grimm leaves the team.
The Thing is one of the strongest members of the Marvel Universe, and that seems to be the case even in the MCU, as he is set to appear in both The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday. In terms of strength, The Thing's physical prowess compares to the Hulk. In fact, one of the most popular fan conversations between Marvel fans pertains to the Hulk versus The Thing.
Adapting this moment from One World Under Doom would let Russo Brothers give Avengers: Doomsday its own 'Thanos beating Hulk' sequence
The Russo Brothers shocked viewers and fans across the world back in 2018 when Thanos beat Hulk to a pulp in the opening minutes of Avengers: Infinity War. This moment set Thanos up as a dangerous and intimidating foe for our heroes, who until then had never been physically challenged. The Russo Brothers need something similar in spirit for Avengers: Doomsday.
However, Doom could be different from Thanos, given the character's magical roots. While Thanos had to fight physically to inflict damage on his opponents, Doom can simulate magic with just a few hand gestures. Also, this way, the Russos can convince the viewers that Robert Downey Jr. can be a great Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Are you ready to lose The Thing in Avengers: Doomsday? But, before Doomsday, get ready to meet Ben Grimm/The Thing for the first time this year in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
