Thunderbolts* features Lewis Pullman playing the role of Bob Reynolds, who eventually becomes Sentry/Void. Several reviews have praised his performance, while the film itself has also received positive critical feedback. Released on May 2, 2025, it holds an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The official synopsis is:
After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, seven disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.
However, I was really surprised recently when I read that Marvel's first choice for Sentry was not Lewis Pullman but Steven Yeun.
Lewis Pullman was not the first choice to play Sentry in Thunderbolts*
Lewis Pullman has portrayed Sentry/Void in the recently released Thunderbolts*. The character can turn everyone into a shadow, and it's one of the recent additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Given how good he is in that role, I could not imagine anyone else portraying Sentry. So I was really surprised to find out that he was not the first person considered for the role. Steven Yeun was the person the role was first offered to.
The actor was also preparing to get into the character before he passed the ball to Pullman. Yeun has voiced the titular role in the animated television series Invincible. Interestingly, Sentry is also referred to as "invincible" in Thunderbolts*, particularly by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. It's because of how the bullets are not affecting Sentry as she is trying to tap into the kill switch. He then wakes up as Void before other supervillains help him.
I'm struggling to imagine Yeun in this role because of how convincing Pullman was. If he were actually cast in the role, the invincible bit would have added a connection between the film and the show.
Thunderbolts*, also known as The New Avengers, is written by Joanna Calo and Eric Pearson. Kevin Feige has produced it under the Marvel Studios banner; Jake Schreier is the director.
In an interview with Empire, Pullman spoke about entering the MCU. He said,
"It’s an intimidating thing to step into, because it has matured into its own thing. It's had its awkward stages and it’s such an exciting trajectory that it's a massive story within itself: how Marvel has come to be. I'm aware of what it means to be a fan of something—almost paralyzingly so. There are things that I love so much, and it feels like sacred ground whenever somebody new is stepping in."
He further added,
"There was never a moment where I wasn't overwhelmingly aware of that, and I wanted to make sure to do justice to what people loved about this character from the comic books, while also keeping in mind that when you leap from the page to the frame, you have a sense of self that you have to bring in whether you like it or not."
The makers of Thunderbolts* have also changed the backstory of Void from the comic book. Unlike the source material (where he barges into the lab and drinks the serum), the character undergoes an experiment that turns him into Sentry.
