Charlie Cox is leaving behind his superhero avatar and stepping into brand new territory as he teams up with 500 Days of Summer star Zooey Deschanel for a romantic comedy Merv. With the first trailer out, the film is already getting buzz for it's heartwarming premise that revolves around a couple, and their dog.

The trailer starts with Zooey's character Anna Finch giving Merv, their dog, a bath as she soft launches her breakup with Cox's Russ Owens. We then get glimpses of Merv being sullen over the breakup as Finch and Owens co-parent him, until his doctor reveals that he's going through depression because of his parents' breakup.

What follows is a trip to the beach, where the couple reunites to lift him up. There are beach runs and yoga sessions and everything they can do to fuel more joy in Merv. They also go on dates with other people as they explain their awkward situation and the trailer hints at the trip ending with so much more than just a happy Merv,.

The official synopsis for the film reads,

When their beloved dog Merv loses his spark after their split, Anna (Zooey Deschanel) and Russ (Charlie Cox) are forced into the world's most awkward co-parenting arrangement. Hoping to shake Merv out of his funk, Russ takes him to Florida for a much-needed getaway--only for Anna to show up unexpectedly. As Merv slowly gets his groove back, turns out fixing their dog's broken heart may lead to a few sparks of their own.

Merv is shaping up to be one of those romantic comedies that finds the sweet spot between heartache, humor, and holiday warmth. Directed by Jessica Swale and written by Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart, the film brings together a story that proves love can be as messy, and as funny, as life with a dog.

Apart from Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel, the cast rounds out with Chris Redd as Vice Principal Desmond, Patricia Heaton and David Hunt as Russ’s parents, MJ and Jack Owens. Joining them are Ellyn Jameson as Jocelyn, Wynn Everett as Gaia, Jasmine Mathews as Rebekah, and Joey Slotnick appears as Dr. Zubrovsky. Director Jessica Swale even makes a cameo herself as an Ice Cream Lady.

Cox has previously spoken about the film and how he has a few scenes of him singing as well. Speaking to Collider, the actor talked about the movie and said,

“Look, I love movies, I love TV, I love acting... going to North Carolina and putting on a pair of board shorts and having fun banter with Zooey Deschanel was really, really fun. I want to do anything that’s challenging. Interestingly, when it comes to choosing jobs, I’m not very precious about the character, funnily. I’ve discovered this about myself."

Surely, watching Cox in a role other than the brainy and brawny Daredevil will surely be a treat. Merv will be in theaters on December 10, 2025.
