The kaiju community went into a frenzy when the new installment was announced. The speculations started the very moment the name “Godzilla X Kong: Supernova” was disclosed. The name “Supernova” alone was enough to assume the existence of a threat on a galactic scale, hinting towards the likely revival of SpaceGodzilla or Gigan, two iconic intergalactic foes ready to return to the silver screen for some cinematic space duel.
Quite frankly, those assumptions weren’t so out of touch considering both monsters have space lineage, which adds depth to their terrifying design, and considering their cinematic history, they truly deserve a massive film comeback.
However, the film has a lesser-known kaiju overshadowed for the last 50 years. This lesser-known villain doesn’t seem appealing to a general audience, but with all the years of hiding, he is a perfect fit for the Supernova-themed add-on. This kaiju is far more thematically relevant than the two mainstream options, and his name is Hedorah.
Being fifty-four years old, he carries the title of the smog monster, representing the ever-changing climate. While Hedorah might lack the sharp limbs of Gigan or the recognition of SpaceGodzilla, his great design, symbolic powers, and environmental theme are why he would outperform any other candidate as the unexpected Supernova villain.
Why SpaceGodzilla and Gigan seem like obvious choices

Ever since the teaser of Supernova dropped, the internet has been buzzing with theories regarding SpaceGodzilla being the next main villain. SpaceGodzilla was first introduced alongside his titular movie in 1994, where it was said he was born from black holes merging crystals and Godzilla's DNA. He's immensely powerful, visually appealing, and, most importantly, fits the cosmic theme, which makes him the perfect fit for a movie named Supernova.
Fans are equally enthusiastic to see Gigan, an alien kaiju that first made his debut in the seventies and was featured in Godzilla vs. Gigan. Nebulans made Gigan, an alien cyborg, look even more menacing with buzzsaw weaponry. Considering Gigan's flashy alien arsenal, fans are sure to get entertained, and the fact that Gigan is well known as one of Godzilla’s most ruthless foes makes him a fan favorite.
But Hedorah makes more sense for where the Monsterverse is headed

Although Hedorah isn’t as glamorous or well-known as Gigan, his story makes him an interesting pick. He is introduced in Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), portraying a monster that travels from the Dark Gas Nebula to Earth, where he starts feeding off the planet's pollution.
As he absorbs more waste and emissions, he transforms into more horrifying forms—ultimately becoming a sludge-spewing nightmare capable of wiping out entire cities.
Hedorah's alien origin alone makes him such a formidable candidate for Supernova, but it is also his symbolism that does a great job. With King of the Monsters and other earlier films using humanity’s destruction of Earth as a baseline conflict, the Monsterverse seemed to touch on the idea of balance within nature. In that lens, he becomes more than just another villain. In the context of Hedorah, he is a representation of a planet that is fighting back.
