I was shocked to learn that Deadpool & Wolverine's BO count is higher than that of Thunderbolts* & Captain America: Brave New World combined

I genuinely enjoyed Thunderbolts*, and it is the first film in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) in years that genuinely got me interested. The film has been appreciated for the way it depicts the mental health of its powerful anti-heroes/superheroes. This is the first time for the MCU. But it appears that while the reviews are positive, very few are flocking to the theatres to watch it.

I was shocked to recently find out that even the combined box-office numbers of Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World are lower than those of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Thunderbolts* has earned lower than Deadpool & Wolverine at the box office

While I loved Thunderbolts*, I expected it might take time, but it will eventually do well at the box office. Hence, its disappointing number took me by surprise. The film, along with Captain America: Brave New World, remains two of the lowest-earning titles in the MCU.

Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine minted $1.3 billion globally, becoming the 11th film in the MCU to achieve that. Even the combined numbers of Thunderbolts* ($357,418,784) and Brave New World ($415,101,577) are far less than that of Deadpool & Wolverine.

I believe there might be some reasons for this. For people, including myself, Chris Evans' version of Captain America still holds a special place in our hearts. Anthony Mackie was more of a supporting character. So it might take a while for everyone to grasp all the changes. Meanwhile, Thunderbolts* features a set of new superheroes that people are unaware of. Compare that to Deadpool & Wolverine, which feature two of the most popular superheroes: Deadpool and Wolverine, and had Hugh Jackman returning in the role.

Thunderbolts* is helmed by Jake Schreier and written by Joanna Calo and Eric Pearson. It features anti-heroes who are put together for a dangerous mission. The cast members of the film include,

  • Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier
  • Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka U.S. Agent
  • Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds / Sentry / Void
  • Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov aka Taskmaster
  • Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel
  • David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian

Speaking to Marvel.com, Shreier said that he got freedom after joining the MCU:

“What really surprised me is the amount of freedom there was. Kevin [Feige] really said from the beginning, ‘Do something different with this one.’ When we were out there on set, it was just us making a movie with these great actors. It didn’t feel like there was any micromanagement. It was just collaboration and trying to make the best thing.”

Speaking about the scene where Yelena jumps from the world's second-tallest building, he said:

“That was the very first thing we filmed. We got shut down by the strike[s], so that giant set had been sitting there for a year, waiting to be shot, and the floors were creaky. Everywhere you moved, it would squeak and creak… It really felt like being thrown into the deep end right off the bat.”
