Ethan Hunt is the key to the massive success of Mission: Impossible, and since 1996, Tom Cruise has proven that he has what it takes to make this character memorable. However, with The Final Reckoning, the 62-year-old star is thinking of stepping down from his position as the torchbearer of this franchise. In his absence, it's not clear whether the film series will continue or not. There haven't been any official announcements about the reboot with another character, but that has never stopped the fans from speculating that it can develop going forward.
If not Ethan Hunt, the IMF will need a stronger candidate to move ahead with the franchise. This isn't just about the physical strength to do your own physical stunts, but the charisma and mental stamina to continue doing the things Tom Cruise has done for all these years. The character also needs to be someone who has a strong moral compass and knows how to competently lead a team. After all, Ethan's job isn't just to do as he has been told. He has also taken on riskier projects and been a fugitive.
Considering all these details, Hayley Atwell's Grace might just be the best fit to continue the Mission: Impossible franchise after The Final Reckoning for a few reasons. Let's explore the same.
Grace can lead the IMF team much like Ethan has done in the Mission: Impossible chapters.

Grace may not be the first choice that comes to mind for some Mission: Impossible fans, who have been following it since its inception. She is not the first skilled female member of Ethan's team either. In fact, Paula Patton's Jane Carter has what it takes to follow Ethan's quest for justice. She was introduced as a team leader who rescued Ethan from prison and avenged her husband's death by killing his assassin. However, despite all her skills and smarts, Jane hasn't been brought back to the franchise since her appearance in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011).
The next guess would be Rebeca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust, who seemed like an equally competent successor to Ethan's legacy. Ilsa had the makings of the group leader, plus Ferguson had gone through rigorous training to perform her own stunts. She did them just as effortlessly as Cruise and had the charisma to follow the "last movie star." However, Ilsa was killed in Mission: Impossible - The Dead Reckoning Part 1, which would make her return seem contrived.
Christopher McQuarrie once clarified that Ilsa's fate is final, and Ferguson spoke about why she left the franchise. She made that choice considering the long commitment to a single project. Since then, she got to prove her acting chops further with Apple TV+'s Silo and the Dune film series, among other projects. So, in her absence, Hayley Atwell's Grace can be the perfect successor to Ethan. Atwell has the screen presence and the charisma, much like the reigning star.
Grace also had a similar journey to Ethan since she was introduced as a mere criminal but was eventually thrust into the globe-trotting missions of the IMF in The Final Reckoning. She understands what's at stake in the missions. Besides that, Atwell has done her stunts much like Cruise has. So, Grace can be Ethan's perfect replacement in physically demanding scenes where Simon Pegg's Benji Dunn hasn't gotten much exposure.
The other possible choice is Pom Klementieff's Paris, another fascinating and morally complex character. However, considering how the IMF has changed the trajectory of Grace's life, she seems like the best fit to replace him.
