Here are some of the latest updates about the planned follow-up to the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You.
In an interview with People, Gil Junger, the helmer of the original film, revealed that a follow-up film, 10 Things I Hate About Dating, is in the making. Although no official approval has been received for its production, the film is in its development stage. In fact, Junger is reportedly building it into a trilogy.
Director confirms the sequel
While speaking to People, Gil Junger said:
10 Things I Hate About Dating is definitively in the works as a feature film. We're developing it right now. [We have] some pretty good ideas.
The second installment of the trilogy will be titled 10 Things I Hate About Marriage, and the third and final installment will be titled 10 Things I Hate About Kids.
Gil Junger is jointly writing the script of 10 Things I Hate About Dating with Naya Elle Jame. The film is based on Molière's 17th-century play The Misanthrope. Unlike the original movie, which focused on the teen audience, this film's target audience is people in their 30s.
Junger is open to the idea of bringing back the original cast members of the film. The 1999 hit starred Julia Stiles, the late actor Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Larry Miller, and many others.
Junger expressed his excitement to work with Julia Stiles, who essayed the role of Kat in the film, by stating:
"I would love to work with Julia again."
He also spoke about the relevance of Stiles' character back when the film was released:
"She shaped the lives of millions of women. That Kat character really spoke to young women in a very powerful way."
He is also open to the idea of bringing some of the cast back for cameo roles in the film:
"If it resonates with [the original cast] and I can have some cameos or even real parts, I'd love [that]."
Junger also expressed his interest in bringing back Larry Miller in the follow-up film. Miller, along with appearing in the original film, starred in the television sitcom revival as well. Junger was all praise for the actor:
"I'd love Larry Miller to come back, because he's so great,"
Nonetheless, the conversation about 10 Things I Hate About You is incomplete without the mention of Heath Ledger, who was one of the leads in the film.
When Junger was asked by the outlet about whether or not 10 Things I Hate About Dating would pay tribute to the legendary actor, he responded with:
"I think that's a beautiful idea, and the answer is now going to be yes. ... He deserves to be loved."
Derived from William Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew',10 Things I Hate About You follows the plot of the sister duo Bianca and Kat, as Bianca, due to a rule set by their father, cannot date anyone unless Kat dates anyone. However, Kat, who is not really keen to date anyone, slowly becomes open to it as Bianca's boyfriend Cameron fixes up his friend Patrick.
