No, Man on Fire is not based on a true incident. It is an adaptation of A. J. Quinnell's 1980 namesake novel which features the character of John W. Creasy. While the story itself is fictional, the author drew his inspiration from two real-life kidnapping cases. One of them was the Chinese Triads gang abducting the son of a wealthy businessman from Singapore. The businessman did not pay the ransom money, which resulted in the death of his son.

Quinnell was also inspired by the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III on July 10, 1973, in Rome when he was 16. He was the grandson of Paul Getty, who refused to pay the ransom of $17 million as he felt John was trying to extract money from him. After the kidnappers sent a newspaper with a severed ear of John, his grandfather negotiated and paid a sum of $2.2 million. His grandson was eventually released after being held captive for five months.

This event itself was widely covered by the media and even inspired a film by Ridley Scott titled All The Money In The World.

Both these bizarre events inspired the author of Man on Fire to come up with the story of an ex-CIA operative turned bodyguard to a wealthy tycoon's daughter. After she is kidnapped, Creasy goes all out to find her.

The cast of Man on Fire includes,

  • Denzel Washington as John W. Creasy
  • Dakota Fanning as Guadalupe Ramos aka Lupita
  • Radha Mitchell as Lisa Ramos
  • Christopher Walken as Paul Rayburn
  • Marc Anthony as Samuel Ramos
  • Giancarlo Giannini as Miguel Manzano
  • Mickey Rourke as Jordan Kalfus
  • Rachel Ticotin as Mariana Garcia Guerrero
  • Roberto Sosa as Daniel Sánchez
  • Jesús Ochoa as Victor Fuentes
  • Gero Camilo as Aurelio Sánchez

Man on Fire was made on a budget of around $60–70 million, and it had its world premiere in Westwood, California. Upon its release in April 2004, the film met with a mostly mixed critical response. It ended up grossing $130.3 million.

Over the years, the novel and the character have also inspired a 1987 film, a 2005 Bollywood film and a television series. The character and the plot keep resonating with viewers and readers across the globe.
