The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean is sailing into unknown waters, but it is sailing somewhere for sure. The return of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, for the sixth film, a reboot for the franchise, remains uncertain after recent events.

Although the talk of a Margot Robbie-starring female-led spin-off film was announced in 2020, the project hadn't moved forward, as stated by the actress a couple of years later. The project is not dead in the water, and is still afloat, as Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in recent news. Bruckheimer, in an interview with The Wrap, stated that Margot Robbie is still attached to the franchise.

He simply said when asked about it that,

"She’s still involved."

Whether she will be part of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is a matter of doubt, but she is set to be part of the franchise in some capacity. This comment was regarding the next installment only, so we are likely to see her in there somewhere, whenever the film is released.

Given her iconic role as Harley Quinn in DC films, we could expect a female character matching the chaos and madness of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Recently, Margot Robbie acted opposite Colin Farrell in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which failed to live up to any word in the title. She is next scheduled to act in Emerald Fennell's gothic film Wuthering Heights, which is set to be released next year on February 13, 2026.

There's still a lot of confusion about the future of the franchise. We can't really confirm until an official announcement if the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film will be a spin-off, a reboot, or simply a continuation of the original one.

But we might have three films in sight. The one is likely to be either a reboot or the continuation of the story. The other two films, if they are happening, are surely spin-offs.

For Pirates 6, Jerry Bruckheimer told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022 that,

"Oh God, they’re all hard. I think we’re getting very close on that one, too. We have a very good script. We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them."

Until any official announcement, we can only speculate about it, but we will likely get to see the Margot Robbie-led spin-off and the reboot (or the original continuity) first, and another spin-off with a younger cast later.

There were rumors that The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri was in talks to replace Johnny Depp in the franchise, which were later debunked. However, Variety reported last year that "Jerry Bruckheimer is developing two versions of the script on parallel tracks, one that could bring Depp back into the fold."

A couple of months ago, in August 2025, Bruckheimer, in conversation with Entertainment Weekly, discussed the potential return of Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. He said,

"If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it. It's all about what's on the page, as we all know."

Jack Sparrow is one of the several iconic characters that Johnny Depp has brought to life. If chosen to reprise his role, on whichever film, the announcement and anticipation might already set a sail towards a bigger box office.
