James Gunn is drawing comparisons between Guardians of the Galaxy and his upcoming Supergirl, as the director talks about how they're both space adventures.

If you thought James Gunn was done showing us how to mix cosmic chaos with heart, think again. The DC Universe’s upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is here to prove the director's cosmic prowess, and apparently, it’s a little reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, the same guy who made us root for a talking raccoon and a singing tree is now steering Kara Zor-El through the stars.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about the premise of Supergirl and how it compares to Guardians and Lanterns, the director told the outlet,

"Supergirl especially is a space adventure. It’s like Guardians. Lanterns is its own thing. There’s just a longer, sort of a bigger world we’re building with all these different pieces and they do all come together and intersect sometimes in a story fashion and sometimes just in a, you know, “here’s another piece of the world” fashion."

Gunn hasn't held back his excitement for Milly Alcock as Supergirl, going as far as calling her "the best bit of casting" he has ever done in his life. Fans have already gotten a glimpse of her in Superman, and from everything we have seen so far, we're strapped in for a wonderful adventure with the Woman of Tomorrow.

The DC Universe is zooming into the cosmos with Supergirl, the superhero epic that promises attitude, edge, and a galaxy-spanning adventure. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film will be the second installment in DC Studios’ freshly rebooted universe, following Superman.

From how the film has been marketed so far, Kara isn’t your classic wholesome hero. Raised on a chunk of Krypton with everyone she loved gone, she’s jaded, fiery, and, thanks to Kryptonians’ solar-powered healing, a party animal on planets with red suns. James Gunn, who produces alongside Peter Safran, describes her as a far cry from the earnest portrayals of Supergirl in the Arrowverse. She even travels with Krypto, her super-powered dog, on what quickly spirals into a murderous quest for revenge. Along the way, she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young warrior, and encounters cosmic tragedies that shape her path.

The film is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, reimagined for a three-act cinematic structure while retaining the comic’s major characters and themes. Joining Alcock in the film are Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Jason Momoa and Emily Beecham.

Supergirl will be in theaters on June 26, 2026, as part of the DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
