You know a film hits hard when you're halfway through crying and suddenly wonder, "Wait, did this actually happen?" That’s exactly the kind of reaction Straw is getting on Netflix. With its raw portrayal of a mother unraveling under the weight of poverty, illness, and desperation, it’s no surprise people are asking if Tyler Perry’s latest emotional gut-punch is based on a true story.

But here’s the truth: Straw may feel real, but it’s fiction through and through. According to Perry, the story wasn’t pulled from a news headline or a courtroom archive. Speaking to Extra TV, Perry explained the inspiration behind the film and said:

'Straw' is... there are a couple of lines in the movie that sum it all up: one is, 'You don't know how expensive it is to be poor,' and the other is, 'Nobody sees us.' So, this is about a group of people, who are on the margins, who are not being seen not being acknowledged, not being represented, and find themselves in all of these crazy situations just to survive and what happens when all of that buildup, you hit the final straw and there's a powder keg."

He then added how he drew inspiration from his own life from the film, continuing,

"And from my own life, when I was writing it, I was just dealing with so much stuff. I just wanted to get it all on paper so that's why Janiyah deals with so much stuff. And the way it all unfolds, there are many people who are dealing with this on this planet."

What is Straw about?

Straw is a harrowing psychological crime drama written and directed by Tyler Perry, released on Netflix in June 2025. Taraji P. Henson delivers a powerhouse performance as Janiyah Wiltkinson, a single mother navigating a relentless storm of poverty, bureaucracy, and breakdown. In Straw, over the course of a single devastating day, Janiyah loses her job, her home, her car, and seemingly, her grip on reality. Each attempt to get help for her daughter, Aria, is met with cold systems and cruel obstacles.

After being fired and wrongly accused during a robbery, Janiyah flees with a gun and her paycheck, triggering a tense standoff at a local bank. As she holds the room hostage, public sympathy swells, only for a gut-wrenching twist to reframe everything. Aria, it turns out, died the night before. The daughter, Janiyah, fought all day, had only existed in her mind.

Backed by Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Sinbad, and more, Straw is less a thriller and more a cry for justice disguised as cinema. The film is receiving widespread praise, and critics are hailing it as one of Perry's best works yet.

Straw is available to stream on Netflix.
