Netflix’s The Thursday Murder Club has only just charmed its way onto screens, but fans are already asking the obvious question: will there be a sequel? With Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie leading the all-star cast, the cozy whodunnit has sparked plenty of buzz about whether we’ll see Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim back for another round of crime-solving. Given that Richard Osman’s bestselling book series already has multiple sequels on shelves, curiosity is high about how Netflix might continue the story after The Thursday Murder Club, and when viewers can expect official word.

Richard Osman kept the cozy crime train rolling with The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed, and The Last Devil to Die, with a fifth book, The Impossible Fortune, arriving this September. With such success, an adaptation was inevitable. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners even snapped up the rights before the first novel hit shelves, outbidding a dozen studios. If Netflix follows Osman’s order, The Man Who Died Twice would be next. While no sequel has been confirmed, director Chris Columbus teased the “next chapter” may already be brewing.

Speaking to PA media about a sequel to The Thursday Murder Club, Columbus said:

"It's all based on how many people watch the film over the first weekend, and we will know in about 10 days if we're making a sequel. I don't want to speak for everyone else, but I would come back in a second. We're at the castle, let's spend 100 days and make both films."

As for Helen Mirren, who led the The Thursday Murder Club, the actress remains just as enthusiastic about returning to solve another murder. Speaking to Radio Times, Mirren said:

“[I’d do another] in a nanosecond. And it would be the team getting back together, which would be great. We did have a wonderful time shooting this. So all of us would jump at the chance, quite honestly.”

The same can be said about Celia Imrie, who told PA media:

"We all would, but we're superstitious and we don't want to spook things. But that's a testament to how much we all had an unforgettable time, an unforgettable summer, it was, really."

Netflix’s The Thursday Murder Club brings Richard Osman’s bestselling debut novel to the screen with a sharp blend of crime and comedy. Directed by Chris Columbus and co-written with Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, the film stars Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie as four retirees who swap tea breaks for detective work. Elizabeth, a former spy, Joyce, a retired nurse, Ron, a fiery union leader, and Ibrahim, a meticulous psychiatrist, unite to crack a local murder, proving sleuthing isn’t just for the young.

The production journey was almost as twisty as the plot. Originally set for Ol Parker, the project shifted to Columbus in 2024 after pandemic delays and Hollywood strikes. Amblin Entertainment first secured the rights, with Netflix stepping in to distribute.

Released on 28 August on the streaming giant, the film has opened to good reviews from the audience. The Thursday Murder Club is available to stream on Netflix.
