As the live-action How to Train Your Dragon continues to make waves at the global box office, a sequel to the film has already been announced, which will again be a remake of the second part of the animated franchise, which came out in 2014.
The second film introduced the audience to Valka Haddock, Hiccup's long-lost mother, who was voiced by actress Cate Blanchett. Gerard Butler, who is reprising his role as Stoick the Vast in the live-action remakes, now wants Cate to also make a physical appearance in the franchise and star in How to Train Your Dragon 2.
In an interview with Discussing Film, Gerard Butler said Cate should return as Valka in the live-action sequel, as there is no one else who could do justice to the role after her stellar performance in the animated films:
"Cate, come on, let’s go. I know she saw the movie and really loved this movie. I don’t know what the deal is; that’s not my area, but it feels like she’s Valka. Just like who else would have come and played Stoick the Vast in the live-action, it had to be me. I feel like it kind of has to be Cate."
Gerald Butler wants Cate Blanchett to play Valka in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2
Currently, Gerald Butler is the only actor to reprise his role from the animated films in the live-action remake. He voiced Stoick the Vast in all three films of the animated franchise, and was joined by Cate Blanchett in the second and third installments.
A few days ago, franchise writer and director Dean DeBlois also expressed his wish to team up with Cate again for the sequel. In an interview with ComicBook, DeBlois revealed he wrote the character of Valka keeping Cate in his mind, and hence, she will always be his first choice for the role:
“Well, I’m wishful as well. It’s still early days. I think she is probably waiting for a script, but I’ve been knocking on that door. I wrote the character of Valka for her, so I told her it’ll always be hers to turn down first.”
Valka is Stoick the Vast’s wife and Hiccup’s mother, who first appears in 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2. She was thought to be dead after a dragon took her away during a raid, but she survived and became a dragon rescuer. Cate Blanchett has not yet commented on whether she is willing to reprise her role in the live-action sequel.
Meanwhile, How to Train Your Dragon is doing wonders at the box office and is being praised for its faithfulness to the animated franchise. The movie was released on June 13, 2025, and has already grossed close to $200 million.
Apart from Gerald Butler, the film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid Hofferson, Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch, and Gabriel Howell as Snotlout Jorgenson. The sequel is slated to release in theaters on June 11, 2027.
