Sentimental Value tells a very personal story of Nora, a successful stage actress, and her sister Agnes coming to terms with their father's wish to make a comeback years after being a revered film director. He invites Nora to play the lead role in his new film, but when Nora declines, he casts a budding American actress, Rachel Kemp, instead, played by Elle Fanning. This incident further makes their family reunion more complicated with buried grudges against each other, while love, resentment, and art go alongside it.

Fanning, as mentioned, has a brief role in the movie, and post the film's release in the US, she appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on November 12, 2025. She expressed how she felt when she saw the film at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film had its world premiere.

Sentimental Value star Elle Fanning appeared on the show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and opened up about watching the film for the first time and witnessing her performance.

The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2025, while the US limited theatrical release happened on November 7, 2025, with global expansion in the following month. She expressed that watching the film was indeed "very emotional" for her:

"It was very emotional. I got to see it separately on my own in a screening room for the first time. But the first time I saw it with an audience was in Cannes (film festival), and that was quite overwhelming, you know."

Fanning continued:

"Because you know, there is part of the movie that I am not in too, so just to discover others, (laughs) I don't know. "

She laughed as the audience took it as the actress was gauging the possibility of other roles she might have done.

Elle cut the conversation laughing hard, while the host called the entire film a "drag" except for her parts, hilariously. She further added how she had only one scene with the two sisters, and their bond very much reminded her of what she shares with her sister:

"You know, Renate and Inga, who play the sisters in the film. I only have like one scene with each one of them. So, especially the sister dynamics in the film, I think also that was speaking to my sister, cause it was very,... That hit us, you know."
