Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi's On Swift Horses has found a streaming home. The sweeping period romance drama will debut on August 23 on Netflix US.

The film stars Edgar-Jones and Elordi as star-crossed lovers, who meet each other at a strange time in their lives. Elordi plays a Korean War veteran who returns home to meet his brother (Will Poulter), married to Muriel (Edgar-Jones). They get charmed by each other's presence despite holding on to their deepest and darkest secrets.

The romance is set sometime in the 1950s, when they had to hide their true desires and put on appearances to keep living. The film touches upon those parts of the history, but more importantly, it presents the kind of swooning romantic drama that rarely gets made in Hollywood these days. So, if you hope to see a romance that takes you back to their heyday, stream On Swift Horses on Netflix.

Apart from streaming details, let's briefly go through what the film reveals through its themes and characters.

Written by Bryce Kass and directed by Daniel Minahan, On Swift Horses is based on Shannon Pufahl's eponymous novel, which tracks the romantic and sexual relationships of a couple in the postwar American West. The story eventually shows them finding other lovers, which leads them on a path of queer relationships.

Based on Pufahl's narrative, the plot synopsis for Kass's screenplay reads,

"Muriel and her husband Lee are beginning a bright new life in California when he returns from the Korean War. But their newfound stability is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic brother, Julius, a wayward gambler with a secret past."

It further goes,

"A dangerous love triangle quickly forms. When Julius takes off in search of the young card cheat he’s fallen for, Muriel’slonging for something more propels her into a secret life of her own, gambling on racehorses and exploring a love she never dreamed possible."

Apart from Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi, and Will Poulter, the cast includes Diego Calva and Sasha Calle. Calva's Henry falls in love with Elordi's Julius, while Calle's Sandra falls for Edgar-Jones' Muriel.

Through their relationships, the film analyzes the nature of intimacy itself. The societal norms keep them yearning for each other, while not being able to be honest about their sexuality. Overall, On Swift Horses is a deeply felt drama that offers a window into the past about LGBTQIA+ relationships, among other things.
