The MCU's X-Men may have found its director in Jake Schreier. If that name sounds familiar, that's because Schreier is the filmmaker known for his acclaimed series Beef, and is familiar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) because of the equally appreciated Thunderbolts*, which later changed its title to The New Avengers.
The Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers filmmaker's name was touted as a potential director for the X-Men movie a month ago, through a Deadline report. His name is now back under consideration, according to a Variety report published on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, titled: Marvel Adds Possible Fourth Movie to 2028 Slate. His potential hiring indicates Marvel is looking at critical and fan reaction rather than just financial performance at the box office.
The MCU's X-Men movie needs a filmmaker who has worked on acclaimed projects
Reading the headline, Marvel Adds Possible Fourth Movie to 2028 Slate, might have you wondering how it relates to Jake Schreier potentially directing the MCU movie headlined by the Mutants. The article is about Marvel adding a fourth movie to its 2028 slate. One line in this report states that Marvel tapped Schreier to direct its first mutant theatrical feature. The line reads:
"“Thunderbolts*” director Jake Schreier has been tapped to helm the MCU’s first mutant movie (although many actors from Fox’s “X-Men” movies in the 2000s, including Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, will appear in “Doomsday”)."
Therefore, despite the online reports, Jake Schreier is not officially confirmed to direct the MCU mutant movie. That line in the June 18, 2025, Variety report probably reiterated last month's report, and nothing more. However, this one line has several online publications stating that he is indeed directing the movie. Well-known YouTuber John Campea also expressed a similar sentiment in his video.
However, even if he isn't officially confirmed, Schreier seems to be a fit for a Marvel ensemble. If he is indeed directing the movie, then it means that Marvel seems to be trying something new when it comes to its X-Men project: Rely on the positive word of mouth that Schreier's previous Marvel project, Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers, enjoyed.
Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers' positive word of mouth is probably what the X-Men movie set in the MCU needs
On June 12, 2025, Variety published an in-depth report titled ‘Thunderbolts*’ Lost Millions of Dollars Despite Great Reviews. Where Does Marvel Go Next?. It revealed that Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers was one of the MCU's least grossing theatrical releases. However, the same article also simultaneously pointed out that the movie is one of the MCU's better-reviewed entries.
The positive word of mouth for Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers seems to have won back some fans, and even critics might help Schreier win the director's chair for the mutant flick. Plus, directing an ensemble movie is hard to direct, and thus it might be prudent to hire someone who has directed a well-received team-up movie in the past to helm the MCU's mutant movie.
