There's a Suicide Squad-like squad that James Cameron will assemble as he lays forth his latest project in front of us. Currently, he is busy with Avatar 3 and Avatar 4, but the next movie is a film adaptation of a bestseller called The Devils by Joe Abercrombie.
The director announced this through his Facebook page with a long post, a portion of which reads,
"This is Joe Abercrombie in absolute peak form, opening up a whole new world and an ensemble of delicious new characters. The twists and turns come at a rollercoaster pace, and with Joe's signature acerbic wit and style. The Devils showcases Joe's jaundiced view of human nature, in all its dark, selfish glory, as told through some decidedly un-human characters."
Lightstorm Entertainment, Cameron's production company, has acquired rights to the story, which features a team of monsters against some human-flesh-loving elves. The book currently holds a 4.35-star rating on Goodreads based on 5,412 ratings as of this writing.
What is The Devils about?
Joe's story is set in Europe, where greed has taken over and the entire continent lies in the hands of figures who have figured out things for their own advantage while the general public can go to hell. That said, all hell is literally let loose, especially because of these flesh-eating elves roaming the earth.
Brother Diaz is the main protagonist of the story, who now has to work with these so-called devils to make things right. He is also accompanied by this thief called Alex, who is likely to sit on a higher throne in the world Joe has imagined. Though it won't be a royal thing in the story.
Monsters in this story range from a werewolf and a necromancer who are tasked to keep a princess safe. They need to help her become an empress, but they need to fight their way to her cousins, who simply want her dead.
The book was released just last month and is said to be the first in The Devils series, most likely a trilogy. Taking that into account, we might see James Cameron adapting this series as a trilogy of films too.
James Cameron is well-versed with chaos that is hell bent on the extinction of a civilization

Though this is a different theme, James Cameron has worked on similar films that plagued the Earth and caused humans to almost succumb to machines. Ring a bell? Yes, we are talking about the Terminator franchise.
He directed the first two films, The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). The later films were produced by different directors, but James Cameron didn't have any association with them except for Dark Fate, where he co-produced it. Though the ones involved with the project were in touch with him.
Then, of course, there is the Avatar series, which isn't really about human extinction but plays out kind of the same. The first film made it clear that resources back on Earth are depleting, which is something of a civilization-collapsing threat.
All in all, five Avatar films are there, and the third, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is scheduled for release on December 19, 2025.
