James Gunn isn’t just reviving the DC Universe, he’s reshaping its holy trinity with fire, flair, and a master plan that’s finally starting to take shape. In a whirlwind of recent updates, Gunn confirmed that Superman- his reboot starring David Corenswet, hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but he’s already outlining the next chapter.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly on June 10, 2025, James Gunn was asked if he has plans for a sequel for the Man of Steel and without giving too much away, Gunn replied:

"What I'm working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily."

Meanwhile, Gunn’s new Batman venture is also steadily gaining traction. The director confirmed that Robert Pattinson is returning as Gotham's hero and that Matt Reeves is currently working on it. His statement reads:

"What Matt's doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary. We're supposed to see that script shortly, and I can't wait."

And then there’s Wonder Woman. James Gunn has confirmed a brand-new film is in the works, one that will have a fresh take that promises to bring Diana back into the spotlight in a bold way. He did note that progress on Wonder Woman is "slow moving, but it's moving", before adding,

"We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now."

Gunn’s made it clear: Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are the four pillars holding up his new DC empire. And while he’s not racing toward a Justice League movie just yet, he’s definitely planting the seeds. He further added how he's prioritizing the four heroes during his reign at DCU as he stated:

"I wouldn't say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we're dealing with the other two."

What fans can expect from James Gunn's DCU?

James Gunn isn’t just rebooting the DC Universe, he’s rewriting the rulebook, ripping up the old one, and sprinkling in chaos, heart, and a little bit of cosmic weirdness. Fans expecting more capes and punches are in for something deeper: a connected universe rooted in myth, morality, and messy heroes. He is starting off with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and seeing his vision and ideas, DCU fans are in for a treat.

It all kicks off with Superman, set to release in July 2025, starring David Corenswet as a kinder, conflicted Clark Kent who’s still figuring out how to be the world’s beacon of hope without losing himself. Next up is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow coming up in June 2026, which introduces Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, not your sunshine cousin, but someone hardened by the horrors of a crumbling Krypton.

The Brave and the Bold brings in a new Batman and, plot twist, his biological assassin son, Damian Wayne. Gunn is co-writing it himself, making sure the tone aligns with his overarching vision.

From Swamp Thing and Clayface to Teen Titans and The Authority, James Gunn’s DCU isn’t just a reboot. It’s a renaissance.

The first project under James Gunn's reign, Superman, will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
