After Avengers: Endgame (2019) left Thor hitching a ride with the Guardians, fans were buzzing about some thunder god antics in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). But Gunn hit the brakes hard. Turns out, the script for the final Guardians movie was already locked long before Marvel pulled the “Asgardians of the Galaxy” twist. And Gunn wasn’t about to shoehorn a literal god into a story that wasn’t about him.
The director spoke about how there were plans to have Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. However, he revealed he insisted on not having the God of Thunder invade the Guardians' story; not out of any hard feelings, but simply because he didn't know how to write the character in the story.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said:
"I said in the script notes, 'I'm not gonna put him in. I don't want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don't want to do a movie with Thor.' I don't understand the character that much. I love watching his movies and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. I don't understand how to write that character."
Thankfully, Taika Waititi stepped in just in time, taking Thor from Gunn's hands.
Thor's relationship with the Guardians of the Galaxy
When Thor stumbled onto the Guardians’ ship in Infinity War (2018), it felt like the start of an intergalactic sitcom nobody asked for but everybody needed. Rocket was instantly dubbed a rabbit, Drax was spiritually moved by Thor’s muscles, and Star-Lord? Absolutely threatened by Thor’s blond god aura. It was love, envy, and chaotic energy at first sight.
Thor found something unexpected in that floating family of weirdos: comfort. After losing everything - his father, his hammer, his planet - this bunch of broken weirdos understood him without needing to say much. In Endgame, a depressed Thor hopped on the Benatar like it’s an Uber escape from responsibility, vibing with Quill and bickering over who’s in charge.
Cut to Love and Thunder, and we find Thor sashaying across galaxies with his new ride-or-die crew. Sure, their screentime’s short, but the vibes? Immaculate. Nebula’s perpetually over it, Rocket’s babysitting screaming space goats, and Kraglin just wants peace. Even in their quick cameo, the Guardians help Thor pivot from wanderer to warrior, nudging him back toward purpose with that messy, found-family magic they’ve mastered. Even though Thor has never been in a Guardians of the Galaxy film, their bond remains just as strong.
Their relationship isn’t about plot; it’s about healing. Thor isn’t just the God of Thunder anymore. He’s the God of second chances, interstellar besties, and of being there when the other is in need, even when you’re not sure who you are. The Guardians didn’t just give Thor a ship. They gave him a soft place to crash, literally and emotionally.
All the Guardians of the Galaxy films and the Thor films are available to stream on Disney+.
