James Gunn is giving fans an insight into his version of Superman and how it's different from all the other iterations of the Man of Steel we have seen in the past. With more than forty versions of the Kryptonian hero floating around, Gunn's Superman, starring David Corenswet, is the latest on the block, and from everything we have seen so far, this one is certainly taking a different route.

Superman will be James Gunn's first project in the DCU and will kick off the era of Gods & Monsters in the studio. The director spoke to Collider in an interview about the film and why he thinks his Man of Steel is different from the rest. Gunn stated,

"We're focusing on a part of Clark's life that we don't normally focus on, which is when he and Lois are first dating, when she's not even sure she wants to go any further. We're also seeing an emotional and personal story about Clark, which is pretty rare. He's not a haunted guy, but in this movie, he does come to some new awarenesses that threaten how he views himself, and that's difficult for him emotionally. That's the core of the story. So, I think it's just focusing on those little pieces that don't in any way go against what Superman is or has meant in the past. It’s just looking at a new piece of it."

He then talked about how he is blending the action in the film with the more emotional parts of Superman, as he added,

"I'm not your average director because I don't think there's anybody that is more emotional but also really loves action. So, those two things kind of fit together in a strange way, where I think that serves Superman perfectly because he is this very warm, open, loving, good, kind guy. He's more in touch with his feelings than other characters I've worked with. But at the same time, I get to play with all the toys and do all the fun stuff that I like doing. Building an action scene is like doing a puzzle."

James Gunn’s Superman follows Clark Kent balancing his alien legacy with his Midwestern roots, trying to be a beacon in a messy, cynical world. He’s already Superman; this is about becoming Clark.

Superman stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and the supporting cast is a delicious mix of Justice League deep cuts: Guy Gardner, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific-eccentric, chaotic, and all very real in Gunn’s grounded, emotionally rich vision.

With Krypto the super-dog, a few symbolic cameos, and a central conflict that digs deep into purpose and power, this is a Superman story that isn’t afraid to get vulnerable. And if Gunn sticks to the landing, it might just remind us why we ever believed a man could fly.

Superman will be in theaters on 11 July 2025.
