Before James McAvoy picked up the mantle of Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, he played a character in Timur Bekmambetov's 2008 film Wanted. While he is working a 9-5 dead-end desk job where his fat boss is always snapping at him, he turns out to be the son of an assassin and has this superhuman strength that gives him abilities that would make James Bond seem like a kid in front of him.

Other than James McAvoy, Wanted stars Morgan Freeman as Mr. Sloan, Angelina Jolie as Fox, Lonnie Rashid Lynn as Earl Spellman, and more. Thankfully, McAvoy's Wesley Allan Gibson leaves the toxic office and people behind to live this badass life of an assassin.

Interestingly, the film will soon be available on Netflix beginning July 16, 2025. Other than Wanted, a miniseries called Amy Bradley Is Missing and Amanda Seyfried's Mamma Mia! will be added to the streaming platforms on the same day.

Wanted was made on a $75 million budget and earned $342 million at the global box office. Critically, it is still as fresh as it was back then and currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 71% as of this writing. The audience rating is close to that, with a 69% score at its Popcornmeter.

TIME Magazine's Richard Corless wrote in his 2008 review for Wanted that,

"Directed at a pitch of gritty giddiness by the Kazakhstan-born Timur Bekmambetov, this hard-R splatter-fest about a team of sanctified assassins is also the summer's zazziest action movie."

What's coming to Netflix other than Wanted?

A long list of old and new movies is coming to Netflix, including the James McAvoy film. We will see them in sequence now. Though new movies are few, we will mention them all, but we will pick only a few from the old ones that are worth watching.

For July 2025, you should best be prepared for the sequel to Adam Sandler's sports comedy film, Happy Gilmore 2. He will return as the titular Happy Gilmore, who is likely assembling a GOAT team. And he is not alone, as this would be a bigger event than the original film. While there will be a lot of famous golfers in the movie, you will also see cameos of personalities like Eminem. The film is releasing on July 25, 2025. That will be all for the month.

But there are still a few movies coming on the streaming platforms that you shouldn't miss. Cillian Murphy's Steve will be released on October 3, a reimagining of the Max Porter story, Shy. Then Guillermo del Toro's Oscar Isaac-led Frankenstein will be coming in November. Another film adaptation of a book, The Ballad of a Small Player, is releasing in the Fall. Lastly, the much-awaited Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is set for release on December 12.

A few films that have already made it to the platform this July include Tom Cruise's Born on the Fourth of July (1989) (though it was added on the first of July), Robert De Niro's 1979 blockbuster The Deer Hunter, Hugo Weaving's V for Vendetta (2005), and more.
