Jay Kelly is about a namesake popular actor (played by George Clooney) who has to travel to Europe with his manager, Ron Sukenick (Adam Sandler). During their long journey, the two discuss and reflect on various aspects of life.

Towards the end of Jay Kelly, Jay runs towards a thief who steals a lady's handbag. He grabs the guy and gets the handbag. Someone in public has recorded the entire chase. Ron and Jay reach Tuscany and realize that Jay's clip with the thief has gone viral on the internet. People are hailing him as a real-life hero.

After Ron's suggestion, Jay agrees to invite his father to join the two for the night. Once the event is done, Ron meets a client named Ben Alcock, who fires him. This shakes up Ron, who talks to his family but doesn't get the warmth he was looking for. Meanwhile, Jay doesn't realize that Ron is not around him.

After some time, Jay is informed by Ron that Tim has withdrawn the lawsuit after his team discovered an old case registered against Tim. Jay's father arrives, but he shows no interest in being there. His vehicle drives off while Jay tries to chase it on foot.

In a Gold Derby interview, Clooney revealed that the film's director used his real footage for the final scene.

“I didn’t know he was going to do that. I thought he was going to do some CGI version of my career. I was looking at all these movies that I’ve done and I was like, ‘Holy sh-t!’ Mostly you just go, ‘I’m old.' But when you see me grabbing Adam’s hand, that was actually real, too. There was an emotional journey.”
