Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning is always in for a good story, and he recently shared this when asked about returning for Maleficent 3. He directed the second film in the Angelina Jolie-led franchise, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which currently holds a low critics score of 40% at Rotten Tomatoes. However, that's the opposite of what fans think of it, as the popcorn meter shows a 95% approval rating.
While talking to Screen Rant, he discussed what he thinks about a potential return for Maleficent 3, and he said,
"I think I'm always interested in a good story. For me, that's what it's all about. So, we will see what the future holds. I love Maleficent, and I love Pirates. It changed my life and career, being able to get that gig. Now doing Tron, I feel so lucky to have been able to do [these big projects]. And also making a smaller film like Young Woman and the Sea, where we go and we have Daisy Ridley and we're out on the ocean doing it for real. And here [with Tron] we're in the computer. I feel very lucky."
As of now, the third film in the franchise doesn't have an official title, but it is still in development.
Maleficent 3 already has a writer

While there's no solid update on who will be directing the third movie in the franchise, it already has a writer, Linda Woolverton, who has worked on the first two films. She solely wrote the first film but co-wrote the next with Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue.
As a writer, Woolverton has worked on acclaimed Disney films, including Beauty and the Beast (1991), The Lion King (1994), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).
