John Boyega opens up about his role in the Star Wars universe, where he believed he would have a bigger part than what he received.

Boyega starred in three movies within the franchise, beginning his journey with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 as Finn. He then continued it with Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). After training as a stormtrooper, he turned to the side of the resistance in a war.

With this role, Boyega entered this franchise alongside Daisy Ridley, who played Rey. Oscar Isaac was also a significant part of the cast as Poe Dameron. In J.J. Abrams' 2015 movie, they all joined forces as a way to stop a new order for the betterment of all. Despite a key role in the first movie, his character was almost ignored in the stories of the next two franchise installments.

It was unfortunate because he believed he would be one of the central figures in the new era of the franchise, likely a Jedi. In regard to this, he spoke with ScreenRant at the Fan Expo Boston. He said,

“I think I assumed he was Force-sensitive from The Force Awakens script, or at least by the time I got to the end of The Force Awakens script. I thought they were planning dual Jedis. I actually thought that they would Obi-Wan and Darth Vader us a bit. That we would turn against each other or something along those lines.”

John Boyega believed that Finn would get a bigger and substantial arc in the new era. Unfortunately, his character was sidelined while other characters continued to develop in the latter projects. In this regard, he further explained,

"So for me, everybody knows, it’s dependent on treating the character well, it’s dependent on fulfilling the arc that was teased quite a lot during the process. And hopefully, this time, it’s them approaching it by having a plan of what they’re gonna do throughout the whole series."

Fans have not been kind toward Boyega since he pointed out some issues he found with the way the universe has never embraced some characters as opposed to others. In a recent documentary titled Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood, Boyega said,

“Lemme tell ya, ‘Star Wars’ always had the vibe of being in the most whitest, elite space. It’s a franchise that’s so white that a Black person existing in [it] was something. You can always tell it’s something when some ‘Star Wars’ fans try to say, ‘Well, we had Lando Calrissian and had Samuel L. Jackson!’ It’s like telling me how many cookie chips are in the cookie dough. It’s like, they just scattered that in there, bro!”

He further added,

“They’re okay with us playing the best friend, but once we touch their heroes, once we lead, once we trailblaze, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s just a bit too much! They’re pandering.'”
