John Candy: I Like Me is a documentary film on Johny Candy's life, the late Canadian actor. It is directed by Tom Hanks' son, Colin Hanks, who has also produced it with Ryan Reynolds, Sean M. Stuart, Johnny Pariseau, Glen Zipper, Shane Reid, and George Dewey.

The film had its world premiere at this year's TIFF. Its official synopsis, as per Letterboxd, reads:

John Candy: I Like Me had its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival as the opening film on September 4, 2025. It will be released on Amazon Prime Video on October 10, 2025.

The documentary was shot by Justin Kane, while Tyler Strickland composed the music. Darrin Roberts and Shane Reid are serving as the editors. The production banners include Zipper Bros Films, Company Name, and Maximum Effort.


What is John Candy: I Like Me all about?

John Candy: I Like Me focuses on the life of Canadian actor and comedian John Candy, who passed away on died on March 4, 1994, at the age of 43. He died while shooting for Wagons East. The cause of his death was attributed to a heart attack. Candy had appeared in films like Home Alone, Spaceballs, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Splash, among others.

The actor's several friends and colleagues from Hollywood appear in the documentary to talk about him. This includes Bill Murray, Mel Brooks, Tom Hanks, Catherine O'Hara, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, Macaulay Culkin, and Eugene Levy.

At one point in the trailer, Murray gets emotional as he says:

"I can't tell you what was right about John Candy, or what was wrong. But he was my friend."

In an official statement, Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds spoke about Candy, saying:

"When you hear the name John Candy, your face lights up. He wasn’t just a great actor; he was an even better person. People loved his everyman qualities, but they didn’t know how relatable John really was."

They continued:

"He went through the same struggles we all do, except now we talk about them. We are incredibly honored to have gotten to know the man better through this process and to bring the real John Candy to audiences starting with his hometown of Toronto."

The film features interviews of several of Candy's friends and family members, along with his home videos, which provide a comprehensive look at his life and career.

Candy's wife, Rosemary Margaret Hobor, is also a co-producer along with their children, Christopher Candy and Jennifer Candy-Sullivan. The makers received access to Candy's family items and information from the family.

John Candy: I Like Me premieres on Prime Video on October 10.
