Professional wrestler and actor John Cena sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss his movies, including F9, as well as Heads of State and other projects. He also discussed his cameo in Barbie, which, interestingly, was a simple accident. Though it was the second time the actor had worked with the film's lead, Margot Robbie, he was casually recruited for the 2023 film while he was shooting for F9, which was released in 2021.
During this conversation, he explained that:
"She said I am doing 'Barbie' and I said I am doing 'Fast X'... we were literally across the street from each other. She said, 'Come over and do Barbie.' I said I would do anything. I believe in your project and I think it is going to be cool... It goes against what people think of me. Who cares? What's the worst that can happen? I like to think about what can go right.... I always rely on instincts. We did all this in two hours. It was fast!"
Barbie was a commercial success, grossing $1.4 billion at the box office. Additionally, it boasts a fresh rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 500 reviews as of this writing.
It was a happy accident

This isn't the first time John Cena has discussed this incident. While promoting his return in Fast X in 2023, he told Today:
"It was a happy accident. I haven't worked with Margot before. We literally randomly ran into each other as friends. Fast X was filming across the street from Barbie. And [she asked], 'Why don't you do Barbie?' I said, 'I've been trying!' And Margot makes a lot of the decisions for that, and I said, 'Well, I'll do whatever you need.'"
He was told not to do a cameo in the movie

Although we got a fun cameo in the film, John Cena was advised against it.
Last year, when he appeared on The Howard Stern Show, he revealed that an agency (which he didn't name) had advised him to do the opposite. He said,
"[The agency is] just going on what they know. And what they know is, ‘This entity, this commodity gravitates toward these things, we should stay in this lane.’ But I’m not a commodity. I’m a human being, and I operate under the construct of every opportunity is an opportunity."
And as we know, John Cena went by his instinct, and everyone enjoyed the worthwhile cameo.
Where 'Ken' you see John Cena in Barbie?

When you see him, you can't unsee him in the fantasy comedy movie. You can see him in a couple of scenes, where he is waving hello to Margot Robbie's Barbie. He has long, blond hair, a large blue tail, and a large blue pendant. He later appears in another scene where people are sitting with their own campfires, and his Kenmaid is playing a banjo.
