John Wick director Chad Stahelski reveals new details about the creative development for the fifth chapter in the Keanu Reeves-led film series. The franchise recently brought Ana de Armas to the screen in a spin-off project as a ferocious fighter seeking revenge. It also shows Reeves coming back to the franchise despite his death in Chapter 4 (2023). However, the events of Ballerina were set somewhere between the third and the fourth chapters. So, his presence made sense.
Shortly before its release, Lionsgate announced that they are bringing a fifth chapter in the series led by Reeves. It's not clear how the makers are hoping to bring him back to the screen. Does that mean Wick faked his death at the Continental? Or will it be a prequel? The plot is being developed by the team. So, in line with this, The Hollywood Reporter recently asked Stahelski about John Wick 5 and its creative development. Stahelski said,
"I’m not going to lie to you, it’s a bit of a conundrum. Me and Mike Finch — the writer on 4 who’s also writing 5 — we’ve got a pretty good story that I think is cool. Once we have a 50-page book, and if we’re feeling it, we’ll sit with Keanu and shape this thing. Look, everybody seems to want it. It’s a matter of whether we crack it. We’re actively working on it. It’s just … is it going to be satisfying?"
Will John Wick 5 be a prequel to Keanu Reeves' character? Here's what the director said

During his conversation with THR, Chad Staheski revealed that he isn't keen on the idea of making the fifth chapter a prequel. He said,
"Keanu and I are not interested in going backward. With the anime, you don’t have to de-age, you don’t have to explain weird stuff, you don’t have to add a backstory. You accept anime in its own language without explanations. Anime just goes pop."
He further added,
"If we go down the road of John Wick 5 and build this story and decide this isn’t right, there are probably going to be 10 other things we’ll discover that we’ll use for other things. It’s a great creative exercise. It’s being in the room riffing with people we love. That’s nothing but wins."
Staheski's excitement for new ideas for John Wick 5 seems enough to make fans hopeful for the franchise's future. Nevertheless, he seems cautiously optimistic about his plans.
"The studio would very much will it into existence, I’m sure, at some point. Look, they’ve been great and they’ve asked us to really try and we have a really good couple of ideas and we’re going to try."
In line with this, Lionsgate's Adam Fogelson trusts Stahelski and the creative team to do what's best for this project.
"Keanu, Chad, Basil [Iwanyk] and Erica [Lee] would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world. We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next,” Fogelson said in April 2025.
