Crazy Rich Asians 2 has long been anticipated, and ever since the announcement of a TV show rendition for Netflix, the excitement has skyrocketed among fans. However, the latest update comes from OG helmer Jon M. Chu, whose words have left the audience a bit disappointed.

What lies in the future of this hit franchise adapted from Kevin Kwan's rom-com novel? Will we have a sequel anytime soon? All these questions have now been addressed by Jon, who reportedly does not want the project to be greenlit till they have "a script that's better" than what they have worked on so far.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 45-year-old filmmaker mentioned:

"I always promised the cast, I will not bring them back unless we get a script that’s better and has as much urgency as the first movie."

These words of the Crazy Rich Asians director, despite the success of the first movie (that bagged $239 million in the BO), leave the future of the saga in question. So far, we do not have any further production updates that could provide a concrete timeline for the film's arrival.

Jon M. Chu recently broke the internet with comments on a Crazy Rich Asians sequel. According to his statements, the sequel novel by China Rich Girlfriend (crafted by Kevin Kwan) will be the backdrop of the highly-anticipated sequel.

However, the creative team is still looking for ways to put the story forward correctly - making sure "it's like the book." Jon M. Chu added that production is not yet at that stage where they have a solid script that can do justice to the original novel - still, "a lot of questions" need to be addressed.

Furthermore, the controversies related to the Crazy Rich Asians screenwriters have also added fuel to the fire. Moreover, we might reportedly see some cast changes if the sequel happens at all, and now that a spin-off series is also in play, adjusting the storyline (as Rachel ventures with her love interest and partner Nick amidst their family troubles) will also be quite challenging.

Accomodating the plot after the first part will reportedly not be a smooth transition, as stated by director Jon M. Chu. More importantly, owing to the triumph of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) in terms of box-office numbers and critic reviews, the bar has now been set quite high. To quote Jon M. Chu's words, per THR:

"The first movie, even though people think, “It’s like the book, so the second book should fit in,” it’s actually not. There’s a lot of shifting, architecturally, and so it’s not a straight translation. And then there are characters that you want to see in a movie that are part of the book."

He further mentioned:

"We’ve done some versions and it’s never quite hit. The bar is high for all of us to come back to do that, so I’m not going to put the audience through that until we’re ready to do it."
