Joseph Kosinski, the man behind Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming F1, will now direct a new Miami Vice film at Universal Pictures. Already given a release date of August 6, 2027, this will primarily mark the return of one of television's most stylish crime dramas.

Set against Miami's neon-lit backdrop of the 1980s, the reboot is expected to catch the mood of the original while bringing in a present-day feel to it. The writing of the screenplay is entrusted in the hands of Dan Gilroy, and the partnership stands to guarantee a balance between character drama and witty dialogue.

The shoot commences in 2026, with Kosinski looking to shoot for the IMAX for an immersive experience of Miami grit and glamour.

No casting has been confirmed officially, but the industry grapevine indicates Glenn Powell and Michael B. Jordan are potential choices for playing Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Powell, who co-starred with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick and then took the lead in Devotion, has the seriousness required to embody the cool, danger-taking Crockett.

Jordan, who has worked on everything from Creed to Black Panther, has established himself as a man of charisma and emotional range that will serve Tubbs well. The prospect of these two leading men paired together has already generated heated debate on the internet.

Though still not officially confirmed, the likelihood of their union has generated anticipation as to how Kosinski will revive the legendary detective duo.

Plot and Direction

The remake will take a cue from the pilot and initial seasons of the show, depicting the seedy glamour of Miami in the mid-1980s. Kosinski is known for combining high-octane action with vivid visuals, and he should bring that aesthetic to the Crockett and Tubbs saga.

Unlike previous adaptations, this movie will try to balance the spectacle and the realistic aspect of working undercover. With Dan Gilroy to script, viewers can look forward to quick-witted dialogue alongside the speed of high-performance cars, clubs, and mob organizations.

The Kosinski-Gilroy pairing is an indicator that Miami Vice will strive for depth as well as spectacle, sussing out nostalgia along with a new vision.

The Miami Vice revival is turning out to be bigger than a timesaving retread. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Dan Gilroy, Universal Pictures is marketing the film as a big event for 2027. Aside from the neon sheen and stylized violence, the project should tap into the Miami of the 1980s, a city of glamour and decadence that had crime lurking in the shadows.

The prospect of casting Glenn Powell and Michael B. Jordan adds to the mystery, uniting two of the hottest stars working today in roles that require equal parts grittiness and charisma.

As production looms in 2026, the reboot is poised to bring Crockett and Tubbs to a generation that has never heard of them.
