As one of The Lonely Island members brings The Naked Gun reboot to life, another member shares love and support for his latest venture. The upcoming comedy film, starring Liam Neeson, is directed by Akiva Schaffer.
In a recent interview, Andy Samberg spoke highly of Schaffer's film, stating:
"It's just pure joy."
Viewers hoping to see a cameo from Samberg, Schaffer, or Jorma Taccone, might be disappointed since Samberg revealed during the conversation that their comedy trio, The Lonely Island, they won't feature in The Naked Gun reboot. Still, Samberg had nothing but praise for Schaffer's comedic undertaking. He told ScreenRant:
"We're not in Naked Gun, but Naked Gun is so good. It's just pure joy. I mean, I'm biased, obviously; Akiva is my guy. But everyone I've seen it with all walked out saying the same thing, which is, like, 'I didn't realize how much I missed that feeling of a pure, silly comedy that's all jokes, wall to wall, in a theater.'"
Samberg further added,
"And I went to a lot of friends and family screenings and test screenings--stuff like that. Me and Akiva are always involved in each other's stuff, and I think he just crushed it. Liam is so funny at it; he's so good. Pam's so good at it. I'm really excited for them. I hope everybody goes and sees it because it's super funny."
In the end, Samberg also shared a hopeful note for the fans, looking forward to a possible TLI musical collaboration:
"Album? Hopefully"
The Naked Gun reboot offers a new take on Leslie Nielsen's classic comedies from the 1980s
Liam Neeson is stepping into the shoes of Detective Frank Drebin Jr., who may not be the best person to do his job. Frank Jr. is much like his father (played previously by Leslie Nielsen), who found the strangest ways to get out of trouble - he tried to solve cases, but had his way of going about it. This also seems to be the case with his son in The Naked Gun reboot.
The teaser trailer, released in April 2025, showed Frank Jr entering a bank, disguised as a school-going girl, to bring the kidnappers to justice. The sequence sets up the tone of the film's outlandish humor that seemingly taps into the parodic nature of the originals. This may not be too difficult for someone like Akiva Schaffer, who has worked extensively on satirical comedy sketches for The Lonely Island.
Schaffer has also been a part of the Saturday Night Live writing staff along with Jorma Taccone and Andy Samberg (who was also a vital cast member). The NBC show is filled with similarly goofy parodies and spoofs that poke fun at anything and everything from pop culture. Hence, it seems like Schaffer is well-suited to bring The Naked Gun reboot to life.
Apart from Neeson, the film also stars Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Liza Koshy, and Kevin Durand, among others.
The Naked Gun reboot is scheduled to be out in theaters on August 1, 2025.
