Tom Cruise does not just play Ethan Hunt. He becomes him in every Mission: Impossible movie. Over the years, he has built a reputation for doing every stunt on his own. He does not rely on green screens or stunt doubles. If a scene needs him to hang off a moving plane or jump off a cliff, then he steps up and does it for real.

People around him often tell him to stop. They say the risk is too high. But he keeps going because that is how he works. Every new film becomes a test to see how far he can take it.

These stunts are not easy. They require serious training and months of planning. Cruise knows what is at stake. People on set have tried to warn him, saying it is too dangerous.

They say it could go wrong. But he does not back down. What you see on screen is not just movie magic. It is real. These five stunts from the Mission: Impossible series were all ones Cruise was told not to attempt. He did them anyway. Each one pushed the limit of what an actor should ever be willing to do.

5 Mission: Impossible stunts, Tom Cruise was advised against

1. Hanging Off the Side of a Plane – Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Tom Cruise hung from the outside of an Airbus A400M while it was in the air. The plane reached a speed of about 250 miles per hour and climbed to an altitude of 5,000 feet. Cruise didn't use a body double and repeated the stunt eight times to get the shot right.

He wore a full harness under his clothes and used specially made contact lenses so the wind would not damage his eyes. The stunt crew raised concerns about bird strikes and the risk of sudden debris hitting him mid-air. The production team asked him not to do it.

Cruise insisted because he wanted the audience to believe what they were seeing. The shot appears in the movie’s opening and immediately pulls viewers into the danger of Ethan Hunt’s world. No other stunt in the film matches its intensity. It set the tone for everything that followed.

2. HALO Jump from 25,000 Feet – Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

For the high-altitude skydive in Fallout, Cruise jumped from a C-17 aircraft at 25,000 feet and opened his parachute just 2,000 feet from the ground. The stunt required him to fall at 200 miles per hour while staying in frame with a skydiving camera operator.

He trained with U.S. military professionals and practiced over 100 times to master the freefall. He had to wear a helmet with built-in lighting and a small camera to film himself during the descent. They only had one usable jump each day because the sky had to match the film’s lighting.

Health and safety experts raised concerns about hypoxia and the possibility of losing consciousness in midair. Cruise pushed ahead. The shot became one of the most impressive moments in the film. The risk was real, and it showed. The HALO jump gave Fallout the grounded realism the franchise is known for.

3. Scaling the Burj Khalifa – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Cruise climbed the Burj Khalifa by hand while shooting a major set piece in Ghost Protocol. The building stands over 2,700 feet tall, and the scene was filmed more than 100 floors above the ground. No stunt double was used for the climb or the swings between windows.

He used suction gloves that stuck to the building’s glass surface. A cable rig was attached to his body and later removed digitally. The team had to adjust for heat and wind since Dubai’s desert climate could impact how the equipment worked during filming.

Several members of the crew warned him about the risk of fatal injury. Cruise stayed firm. The climb became the film's defining image and was used heavily in all promotions. No other scene in the series captured the sheer scale and madness of what Ethan Hunt is willing to do to complete a mission.

4. Cliff Motorcycle Jump – Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Tom Cruise launched himself off a massive cliff in Norway on a dirt bike in one of the film’s biggest action scenes. He accelerated off a ramp built into the edge and let go of the bike midair before base jumping into the canyon below.

He spent over a year preparing for this scene. His training included 500 skydives and 13,000 motocross jumps. The stunt was so dangerous that the studio shot it first in case he got seriously hurt or worse. He performed it six separate times until the team had what they needed.

There were no visual effects added to enhance the danger. The raw footage speaks for itself. This moment comes early in the film and sets the tone for what kind of mission lies ahead. It shows Ethan Hunt is ready to do anything. The scene became the most talked-about part of the film’s release.

5. Underwater Breath Hold – Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Tom Cruise held his breath underwater for more than six minutes while filming a vault infiltration sequence. The scene required him to swim through a mechanical security system while staying calm and in control under pressure.

He trained with freediving experts and adopted techniques used by military divers. There was no oxygen hidden in the tank and no cuts in the shot. Doctors remained nearby during every take. They warned about shallow water blackout and potential long-term damage to his lungs.

Tom Cruise refused to let the moment be faked. The scene adds a new kind of danger to the film. There are no explosions or fights. It is just Ethan Hunt against time and water. The stillness and difficulty of the task make it one of the most suspenseful parts of the movie and one of Cruise’s most extreme physical feats.
