This space flight, or shall we say submarine, is going to get bloody. Iron Lung, the 2022 horror video game by David Szymanski, is getting a film adaptation, and it got a new trailer was dropped on YouTube recently, drowning the viewers in claustrophobic and bloody details like in the original video game.
According to the film's synopsis from the promo website:
"An ocean of blood. The only hope left after the Quiet Rapture. In the rusting halls of crumbling space stations, the last remnants of humanity craft a submarine to explore the bleeding depths... and weld one soul inside to pilot it. But hope in this void is as illusionary as the starlight. This is not an expedition. It's an execution."
Mark Fischbach, also known as Markiplier on YouTube, is directing, writing, and starring in it.
Like in the game, a convict is set to explore a desolate moon full of human blood alone. This is a similar trope in films like Project Hail Mary, which is set for release next year. In it, Ryan Gosling's Dr. Ryland Grace will be sent to space alone for a mission that is crucial to humanity's survival.
Iron Lung trailer breakdown
We first see Mark Fischbach's protagonist inside the titular submarine, and an operator's voice confirms that the descent is beginning. Though this mission is important, it seems like the people behind the mission didn't really check the submarine for its durability, as the operator's voice asks the man to check for any flames while it is being submerged in the ocean of blood.
However, that voice clears it out after the protagonist asks if they have tested Iron Lung and says that "this is the test." It seems like he is just another expendable there, like Robert Pattinson was in Bong Joon Ho's recent sci-fi flick Micky 17 (2025).
If you notice, the narrator narrating a story in the background points out a potential reason behind the event that has transpired, The Quiet Rapture. The voice says, "too few to rebuild, too many to feed." That voice isn't Josh Brolin's, but it is certainly giving off Thanos-like vibes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What strengthens the fact that the guy in Iron Lung is expendable is that he is the first one down there. And the operator's voice is so carefree that it will make you feel like everyone is sending him there just to see whatever faults there are in the submarine or whatever threats they might come across there before sending an actual crew.
As the Iron Lung trailer comes to its end, there is too much blood pouring inside the submarine. It seems like that metal thing is indeed a piece of junk needing some repairs, though we hope that's not the case. Finally, we hear the protagonist say these words:
"I just want to live. Is that so wrong?"
These words don't really give away much, but listen to the way the protagonist says it. Maybe that is a punishment for something that he did while he was out.
