What is Kiss of the Spider Woman?
Kiss of the Spider Woman is an adaptation of the namesake stage musical by Fred Ebb, Terrence McNally, and John Kander. The play itself was inspired by a 1976 book, which was previously adapted into a Brazilian film.
The film focuses on Valentín, who is jailed as a political prisoner. Molina is with him in the cell. Over a period of time, the two become closer as Molina talks about a musical starring Ingrid Luna.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bill Condon revealed why he decided to adapt a stage musical.
"I don’t think there are that many Broadway shows that should be films. It’s a really, really high bar. I did think Dreamgirls was one of them. And I thought Kiss of the Spider Woman was another, simply because, like Cabaret and Chicago [also by Kander and Ebb], the lead character is someone who has a very difficult day-to-day experience and separates himself from that through a very rich fantasy life connected to show business. I always felt like it was the unmade third leg of that triptych."
In a CBS News interview, Jennifer Lopez revealed why she did the film.
"I just thought to myself, This is what I've been waiting for my whole life. I grew up on musicals. My mom loved musicals, and so I saw every musical you can think of. She was a fanatic!"
The film will be released on October 10, 2025, through Lionsgate, LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions.
