After Studiocanal acquired rights to the book, Patrick Marber was given the responsibility to adapt the novel into a screenplay. Martin Scorsese is going to direct the film, while Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence star as protagonists. In a recent episode of the New Heights podcast, which featured Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro's first podcast appearance, the two actors talked about their upcoming film One Battle After Another, career highlights, potential stage names that didn't make the cut, and their experience with different directors.

As Film Updates reported on X, in the podcast, DiCaprio confirmed that he will be starring in What Happens At Night, which will be directed by Martin Scorsese. Apple Original might be the one to fund the film, while Studiocanal will produce it.

The film will follow an American couple who travel all the way to a city in Europe solely for the purpose of adopting a child. The film is based on the book of the same name, and according to Variety, the book's synopsis states,

“It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child.”
“On arrival, the couple checks into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer. Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.”

The creatives behind What Happens At Night are aiming to start filming in 2026. Stay tuned for more information.

One Battle After Another will be released in theaters on September 26, 2025.
