Stakes have gone higher in Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the 2021 film directed by Simon McQuoid.
The films are based on the fighting video game series of the same name that began in 1992. Ed Boon and John Tobias created it and gave us the characters that would become a part of gamers' lives.
Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young, a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada) and who would later become the iconic Scorpion, shared in a recent interview with ComicBook that we are about to witness some serious madness in the upcoming movie. Talking about Mortal Kombat 2, he said,
"Producer Todd Garner really took into mind what fans were saying from the first movie. Obviously, we want to please the fans. It’s such a huge franchise. There are hundreds of different characters. There were a lot of things we learned from the first film, that we wanted to do better."
"The second film really allows us to run wild with the action. It was something I wanted to do in the first film, but you don’t always get your way the first time. But Todd Garner really listened to the fans and you have some of the craziest fights ever in the second film. You have a sharp script written by Jeremy Slater."
The first movie was less about the tournament, Mortal Kombat, and more about Young Cole, establishing the lore for the fans. Other than Tan's character, the duo of Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Kung Lao (Max Huang), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), and more were also in the movie.
While many of the new characters will be returning, some new characters will also appear as the main focus shifts towards the tournament. This includes Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Baraka (CJ Bloomfield), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), and more.
It's not the only thing Lewis Tan is teasing in Mortal Kombat 2
There's no doubt that the movie will offer some exciting surprises. Especially after what Lewis Tan teased, there is a lot more to look forward to.
As mentioned above, Tan revealed that Mortal Kombat 2 will feature an epic fight scene involving his character, though he didn't give it all away. So he just said,
"I can’t tell you who it is with, but when you know who it is with, you will know why it’s so epic."
So who is this character? Are Mortal Kombat 2 creators trying to pull off Avengers: Doomsday, where they are seemingly hiding some characters to be revealed when the movie is released?
For Mortal Kombat 2, there is already a huge line-up. Some of the characters are already mentioned in this article.
Interestingly, the character of Cole Young is exclusive to the recent films, so we can't even speculate who he is going to fight. For example, if we talk about Scorpion, the name Sub-Zero comes to mind.
So, this mystery character could be anyone from the entire franchise. There are a plethora of characters in video games, so you have plenty of time to figure out which character this is, as the movie will be released on May 8, 2026.
