Disney has struck gold with the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, which has surpassed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, being the second-highest-grossing movie in the 2025 list.
The Dean Fleischer Camp directorial, which followed the wildly funny and charming tale of a blue alien and his Hawaiian girl, has seemingly won over the audiences. It marked a staggering $183 million debut upon its opening weekend of four days, which skyrocketed its rank to the top in Memorial Day box office collection history.
At the time of writing this article, the film has earned $416 million at the domestic box office and $584 million in the international markets, taking its cumulative gross to cross the $1 billion mark (per The Numbers). With these figures, Lilo & Stitch is just behind the Jack Black-starrer A Minecraft Movie ($423 million) in the domestic market.
Although behind the Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 at the worldwide box office, Disney's live-action film is reportedly the highest-grossing MPA (Motion Picture Association) film of the year (per Collider).
Will there be a sequel to the Lilo & Stitch live-action film? Here's what we know so far
Considering the groundbreaking success of this live-action release, viewers might be wondering if the studio has greenlit a follow-up project. Is there a Lilo & Stitch on the way? Here's what the director said during his Variety interview on June 7,
"If it was the right idea. I wouldn’t do it just because there’s a new market demand for it. But I also really like the idea of doing an animated spin-off as an episodic or limited series."
The latest update on this topic comes from Alan Bergman, the Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, who shared the following statement related to the film surpassing the $1 billion mark.
“We knew there was a lot of love for Lilo & Stitch with audiences around the world, yet we never take that for granted, and we’re proud of how this new film has connected with people. I’m thankful to our filmmakers, our cast, and all on our studio team who have made this film such a success, and we look forward to more adventures with these characters ahead.”
Based on Bergman's words, a sequel seems to be on the table for this project, and the studio seems enthusiastic about the idea of a follow-up project. Apart from Bergman, Amy Hill, who stars as Tutu in the live-action adaptation, also spoke about this topic in her recent conversation with Collider. Here's what she said,
“I'm already negotiating, yes. So I'm very happy. I'm happy to be part of that universe. No contracts have been signed, the script hasn't been written, but we are in negotiations. So that's good.”
According to these updates, a sequel appears to be in active development at Disney. However, we are yet to receive a concrete, official update on this topic from the studio.
Lilo & Stitch live-action is available to watch at cinemas.
