Macaulay Culkin recently addressed some long-running trivia surrounding the Home Alone movies, including some rumors and secrets.
The 44-year-old star appeared on Sean Evans' Hot Ones interview series, where he spoke about his career and his special interests. He's the second Culkin family member, after Succession star Kieran, to appear on Evans' show. He also addressed Kieran as the Oscar-winning family member while sharing his interest in different kinds of comedy.
The discussion soon reached a point where Evans asked him about some Home Alone lore to check if there was any truth to it.
One of these questions was about the rumors that claimed the photo of Buzz McCallister's girlfriend is actually of a boy in makeup. This was reportedly because director Chris Columbus thought it would be too cruel to make fun of a little girl this way.
“As far as I know, yes. I mean, you’d have to ask Chris, but that’s what I was told. Apparently that was the gag,” Macaulay Culkin said.
Macaulay Culkin reflected on his experience and spoke about improvising dialogues
Home Alone has become a staple Christmas watch and a classic comedy in its own right. It has so many memorable lines that people remember even years after they see the movie. One of these lines is,
"You guys give up? Or are you thirsty for more?”
Kevin McCallister says it after torturing the thieves trying to break into his house when he is there, all alone. It's a comedically satisfying moment that hits at the right moment. So, some viewers assumed that Macaulay Culkin improvised it during the shoot. The actor said that it wasn't the case.
"No, not that one. That was in the script," Macaulay Culkin said.
However, Culkin revealed the line that he did improvise while filming a scene. It happens when Kevin arrives at a grocery store; he gets asked about his parents. He spoke about the time of the shoot, saying,
“When I was at the grocery store, it’s like, ‘Where are your parents?’ ‘Why won’t you tell me?’ And I said, ‘Because you’re a stranger,’ That one was mine. I did a lot of that kind of stuff.”
Macaulay Culkin also addressed the rumors about Goodfellas star Joe Pesci intentionally staying distant from Culkin to get the right kind of performance. In line with this, Evans asked,
"Did Joe Pesci deliberately distance himself from you because he wanted you to think that he was mean?"
To this, Culkin replied, saying,
"That's what I heard, but I can see why he was kind of 'Oh, I want to scare the kid, I want to be scary.'"
The Home Alone star also discussed his experience of working with another older collaborator, his 30-year-old stunt double, when he was just 9 years old. He didn't know exactly how old the man was, so he guessed that he was only 13! Speaking about a stunt the man performed, Culkin said,
“He’s climbing the shelf, trying to reach the thing on top, and the whole shelf collapsed. It was vicious that first take. They do it again, and there’s another take, and just boom. They didn’t like the way everything fell. And they do it again, and they do it again, and they do it again, and I’m going, ‘Please take it easy on Larry! He’s only 13 years old!’”
Macaulay Culkin-starrer Home Alone is available to watch on Disney+.
