Marvel Comics debuted in 1939 as Timely Comics and became well-known for superheroes such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America. Disney now owns the comic book publication since 2009.

Most Marvel stories take place in the same world, often in New York City, and are still very popular today. Marvel is entering a new era, with a new X-Men ensemble and the formal farewell to Robert Downey Jr. but not his character Iron Man.

Kevin Feige said in a recent interview with Variety regarding the reset plans for MCU:

"Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines. X-Men' is where that will happen next."

He continued:

"We're utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we've been telling post-'Endgame,' just as importantly — and you can look at the at the 'Secret Wars' comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future," Feige said. "'Endgame,' literally, was about endings. 'Secret Wars' is about is about beginnings."

Following Avengers: Secret Wars, the MCU will reset, presenting new heroes and tales while respecting its history. Classic characters will be reinvented to keep the universe fresh and interesting.

More about Marvel and X-Men

With new characters, younger heroes, and intriguing future paths, MCU is embarking on a new era of storytelling. The complete recasting of the X-Men and a dignified farewell to Robert Downey Jr., who contributed to the MCU's first success on a worldwide scale, are two of the most significant changes that are on the horizon.

Kevin Feige who is the president of Marvel Studios has announced that the MCU would undergo a creative "reset" following the next film Avengers: Secret Wars. Unlike a complete reboot, this reset will not erase anything from the past, but it will help move the focus to current storylines and characters. It's Marvel's approach of updating its universe while maintaining the franchise's core.

The launch of a completely new X-Men roster is a crucial component of this new course. New actors will portray iconic roles like Professor X, Wolverine, Storm, and Magneto and Young mutants learning to harness their powers and attempting to find their place in a world that fears them.

The majority of the action will happen at Xavier's School for Gifted Children. Marvel intends to use this environment to examine topics that have always made the X-Men accessible, such as identity, and acceptance.

At the same time, Marvel is prepared to part ways with some of its old heroes and Robert Downey Jr., who has played Tony Stark/Iron Man since 2008, will not return for future MCU films. Stark's quest came to a heartbreaking conclusion in Avengers: Endgame, when he sacrificed himself to rescue the universe. His role was crucial to the MCU's early success and has left an indelible mark.

Tony Stark was more than simply a superhero wearing a costume, he was a brilliant innovator, leader, and mentor and his tale shaped the first three stages of the MCU. Even after his death, his legacy continues on via characters like Riri Williams, better known as Ironheart, a teenage scientist who constructs her own superior armor to commemorate Stark's memory.

However, Stark and possibly Captain America are among the other iconic characters that Marvel is expected to recast in the future and Kevin Feige believes that, like with other enduring series like James Bond and Superman, new actors may bring fresh perspectives. It may also bring vitality to these characters.

With upcoming films like Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel is laying the foundation for a new generation and the goal is to celebrate the past while anticipating a bright future for both new and existing followers by finding a balance between nostalgia and innovation.
