Avengers: Doomsday is the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and it will be released on December 18, 2026. The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who had earlier directed the 2019's Endgame. It marks several actors from the previous MCU phase reprising their superhero characters. Interestingly, the film also has Robert Downey Jr. portraying the antagonist Doctor Doom.

He previously played Iron Man/Tony Stark, and the character died after stopping Thanos in Endgame. Recently, reports also hint that Marvel Studios will be introducing the young female Avengers in the film as well.

Avengers: Doomsday to introduce young female avengers

Avengers: Doomsday will introduce a set of female superheroes called Young Female Avengers. This will be a part of the Young Avengers, and it will consist of names like Kamala Khan, Cassie Lang, Riri Williams, Kate Bishop, and America Chavez. All these characters have appeared in different films and shows in the MCU; and will reportedly be brought together, all in one place in the new Avengers installment.

The film is written by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, while the Russos and Kevin Feige are the producers. The fifth Avengers film was earlier supposed to be called The Kang Dynasty. However, the legal issues of its actor, Jonathan Major, forced the studio to move away from that storyline.

Avengers: Doomsday will feature several superhero groups (including X-Men and Fantastic Four) coming together to fight Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr. was introduced as the film's antagonist at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. The cast members of Avengers: Doomsday include,

  • Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor
  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier
  • Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Captain America
  • Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man
  • Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka U.S. Agent
  • Simu Liu as Xu Shang-Chi
  • Letitia Wright as Shuri aka Black Panther
  • Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom aka Doctor Doom
  • Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic
  • Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme aka Mystique
  • Tom Hiddleston as Loki
  • Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto
  • Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier aka Professor X
  • Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau aka Gambit

While the cast is known, the makers have been maintaining silence about the film's plot. Joe Russo, in an interview, said:

“The one thing I will say about the movie is this: we love villains who think they're the heroes of their own stories. That's when they become three-dimensional and when they become more interesting. And when you have an actor like Robert Downey, you have to create a well-shaped three-dimensional character for the audience."

Robert Downey Jr's return in the franchise as the villain has reportedly generated quite a buzz. In a different interview with Entertainment Tonight, Joe Russo revealed that the actor is immersed in the role.

“It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in.”

Joe added that the actor is working on the character's backstory as well as costume ideas.

“I think he just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”
