In Celine Song’s lush, whip-smart rom-com Materialists, sparks fly, not just between characters, but all over the screen and it’s no accident. Set in a glittery, fast-talking New York, the film stars Dakota Johnson as Lucy, a savvy matchmaker who can fix anyone’s love life but her own. When her perfectly curated world is upended by two men- the charming but broke ex-boyfriend John played by Chris Evans and the dangerously charismatic, very rich Harry played by Pedro Pascal, Lucy finds herself in the middle of a deliciously complicated triangle that asks the age-old question: do we fall in love with people, or their potential?

But what really makes Materialists shine is the magnetic trio at its core. Song, who stunned audiences with Past Lives, took a new approach here. Instead of keeping her cast emotionally distant, she threw them into the deep end of friendship, letting their real-life chemistry bubble up into something that feels... electric.

Talking to Empire about the stunning cast, the director said:

"They’re just so into each other. We were trying to be specific about the chemistry between them as characters too. Because it has a different meaning and a different goal for each scene. The heart and the head, and then the math and the non-math. Those crash into each other in this film.”

The film is looking ahead to becoming the ultimate romantic comedy for the summer, and judging it by everything we've seen so far, Celine Song might just have made the rom-com of the year.

All three MCU stars- Evans as Captain America, Johnson as Cassandra Webb from Sony Pictures and Pascal who will be debuting soon as Reed Richards in Fantastic Four: First Steps- have had quite some time before getting into the genre of romance in their careers, which makes their film all the more exciting.

The tension is palpable and both the pairings have brought in quite the buzz among fans who have longed to see Chris Evans in a rom-com after his brave and brawny stint as Captain America for almost a decade. As for Pascal, the actor seems to be taking a break from his action movies and Dakota is always a delight to watch in romantic films.

The actress has previously opened up about what made her choose the character of Lucy as she talked about the film at a promotional event and said:

“After I read the script, I was immediately enticed by the layered inscrutability I saw in Lucy. I was drawn to the role because it’s so complex. Lucy has so many different dynamics in the film, so there’s many different Lucys. She’s a bit of a different person with every other character — she’s sort of a chameleon in that way. And then you’re wondering which of her is the truth, which I thought was just so fun to play with.”

Materialists is hitting theaters on 13 June, 2025.
