Hayley Atwell, who has portrayed Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been one of the most prominent female characters in the franchise, although her on-screen presence has been limited. She first appeared as Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 and has since continued to play her in subsequent series' Agent Carter and even made an appearance in the animated What If...? Where fans got to see an alternate reality where Peggy took the super serum instead of Steve.
With her last appearance being in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, fans have not gotten an opportunity to spend time with Carter on screen, and the actress is clearing up if she's ready to return on screen. In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Atwell expressed a strong interest in returning to the franchise, stating that there’s still “so much more” the character could offer.
"I would love that. There are so many things that she could do, there’s so much more I feel I can bring to a character because I’ve developed as time’s gone on. What’s so great about having time behind you and having had a 20-year career so far is the development of skill, and I think there’s so much more that Peggy can do. She’s very much an underserved character."
As the MCU continues to explore more and more characters and the multiverse gets all the more prominent, it's actually quite possible for Peggy to return as Captain Carter to the MCU. Although there have not been any rumors about her appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel could always make some space for her in Avengers: Secret Wars.
How Hayley Atwell Peggy Carter could return to the MCU
Though Peggy Carter’s story appeared to conclude with Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe could just bring her back again. As the Multiverse Saga continues to unfold, Hayley Atwell’s beloved character has more than a few possible paths back into the action.
One of the most promising options is through her multiversal counterpart, Captain Carter. First introduced in Marvel’s animated What If...?, this version of Peggy received the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. The character proved so popular that she made her live-action debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though her appearance was brief. Despite that variant’s fate, the multiverse allows for infinite versions, and another Captain Carter could easily show up again, especially with Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon.
There’s also the chance of a time-travel-based return. Marvel has already explored alternate timelines with Steve and Peggy’s bittersweet reunion, so revisiting her through past events, missions, or historical flashbacks could open new narrative doors. A prequel project exploring her early days with S.H.I.E.L.D. also remains a strong possibility.
Whether through multiversal chaos, a standalone series, or strategic flashbacks, Peggy Carter’s presence in the MCU still resonates with fans. And with Marvel Studios leaning into legacy characters more than ever, her return doesn’t feel like a question of if, but when.
