Mickey 17, the latest Bong Joon-ho film, leads up to a climactic finale that reveals the fate of Robert Pattinson's duplicate characters. Before getting its ending explained, let's recap. The film marks director Bong Joon-ho's return after Oscar-winning Parasite. It premiered at the 2025 Berlinale before its wider theatrical release on March 7.

The film is a sci-fi black comedy, whose logline reads as

"Mickey 17, known as an "expendable," goes on a dangerous journey to colonize an ice planet."

Set in the near future, the film shows Robert Pattinson playing multiple versions of Mickey, a desperate Earth inhabitant who enrolls in a program to colonize another planet called Nilfheim. He becomes their low-level disposable employee who gets "reprinted" into a clone every time he dies. Eventually, he finds himself in a tough spot when his 17th replicant survives.

This dystopian film is based on Edward Ashton's novel titled Mickey7 and stars Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun in the central roles.

At the end of Mickey 17, Mickey 18 sacrifices his life while killing Kenneth Marshall. The colonizing humans establish a healthy relationship with the original inhabitants of Nilfheim.

Mickey 17 follows Mickey (Robert Pattinson) enlisting in a dubious 'expendable' program to help politician Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo) colonize the Nilfheim planet, habitable to humans. This program previously faced a lot of flak after its inventor was discovered to be a psychopath.

Still, Marshall and his wife, Ylfa (Toni Collette), decide to use it after losing an election on Earth. Mickey enrolls so he can pay off his massive debt. His friend, Timo (Steven Yeun), joins him as a pilot. Mickey falls in love with Nasha Barridge (Naomi Ackie), a fellow employee who cares for him.

After dying the 16th time, Mickey's 17th clone survives a near-death situation. As it happens, Mickey18 gets reprinted. It puts them both in trouble since the co-existence of duplicates is forbidden. They get worried and try to kill each other but to no avail.

The creepers play a significant role in the film's narrative since they are the original inhabitants of Nilfheim. Marshall sees them as a threat to his hopes to dominate their planet. His employees never question his intentions and blindly trust his mission.

Marshall calls these creepers 'dangerous' even if they mean no harm to humans. 17th Mickey clone realizes their true intentions after they protect him despite having every chance to kill him. Marshall pits the Mickeys against each other and the creepers. However, it doesn't bode well for him.

Toward the film's end, Marshall sends Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 outside to kill the creepers who were marching toward the human base. Whoever kills the most creepers between them can survive. Unbeknownst to Marshall, The Mickeys use a translation device to speak with the creepers' leader.

The leader says that it wants to kill all humanity to avenge the abduction of a baby creeper. To avert this danger, Mickeys must return the baby creeper and sacrifice a human to save the human colonizers. So, Mickey 18 sacrifices his life while killing egotistical Marshall.

After Marshall's death, Nasha wins an election to become their new leader. She destroys the reprinting device to protect the humans henceforth. Mickey 17 survives the tragedy but cannot escape his deep-seated paranoia. He dreams that Ylfa brought Marshall back to life with the machine. In reality, Ylfa died shortly after Marshall's death.

The ending of Mickey 17 shows him and Nasha dismantling Marshall's authoritarian regime. They pave the way for a safer future for humans and creepers alike. It also reveals that the creepers' leader lied about his plan to eradicate the human race. He used that bluff for the greater good.
